This M8 using oil thing.....

Is this true? I spoke to an independent HD tech the other day and he said that a few of the new Milwaukee 8 motors have been burning excess oil and some have had their oil pumps fail... goodbye motor... I know there can be teething problems with a new design but using oil is unacceptable I think. Bugatti run their Chiron engines at red line for like eight hours straight to test them. HD rigorously tested the new Vrod engine, why wouldn't Harley do something like that for the M8? If I'd know this I might have had second thoughts of buying a new Fat Boy.
In 2200kms since its first service the dip stick is showing it needs a top up but just a little I think. All new motors burn a bit more oil for the first few thousand ks right?

I was told that as long as I didn't go past stage II on the motor I wouldn't have an issue... and 20,000 kms later I still haven't *touch wood*.

Put a cold spoon on my desire for a harley that's for sure.
I'll be going the Loftybob route and get an adventure bike.
One do it all bike, - coffee shop, toy run, getting bread and milk.
Even the occasional dirt road during road works.

Its such a shame because i really love the bike. So there's a possibility that my 114 will be fine with no problems at all? or is it a given that they all have one issue or another? and if that's the case and this is common knowledge I wont even be able to give it away. omg what a heart breaking loss of money..........................
or am I over dramatizing now??

I like this guys take on the US forum and I must admit there's way way more people on there that love the bike and have had no issues than people that have.
"As usual, anytime the MoCo comes out with something new all the Chicken Littles wil claim the sky is falling as soon as even one person has an issue. Been on the forum a long time and it happens every time. Happened when the Rushmores were released. There could be 10 zillion of them running great but if one guy has an issue then some will claim we are all Beta testers and the guys start claiming they will keep there 2003 whatever will come outa the woodwork. Think what you want, I've had 2 M8s already and both have been flawless. I've owned 5 BMWs and they too had issues that Motorad had to address, one was a surging issue a few years back. If ya don't like them, don't buy one. MoCo will stand behind the product"
    OR
"talk about a Doomsday Negative Nelly pegged at the other end of the pendulum opinion..the vast majority of M8 owners are in love with these new Harleys..I ride with several HOG Chapter friends who own M8's with no issues and we're all at about 10K mile averages...we all can't stop talking about how great they are..all I can say is those frightened away by the exception not the rule issues are missing out on the best Harley touring bikes ever produced"

Good info on here, thanks. Was getting tempted to upgrade but now I might wait another year until they iron out all the gremlins.

G'day forum members, I haven't been on the forum for a while now but thought Id jump on this thread with a question. Hope it's the right place?

Ok so I traded my Dyna on a 2021 Road King Special last September and have done 6000km on it since. I had the 1500km service done and had not checked the oil since.

I checked it the other day at 5800km and the oil was barley even registering on the dip stick FFS. I had to add at least 1 1/2 litres of oil to top it up. The bike doesn't blow smoke or leak oil.... its brand new.

Everything Ive read on the internet seems to state that these M8 motors may use oil initially?? The dealer has said the same. Cant say Ive experienced this before with any vehicle.

I decided to dump the exisiting oil and refill with fresh Penrite. After filling and running for a few minutes on the jiffy stand the dip stick reading was about 3/4 full. I was happy with that so left it. I have just re-checked it completely cold and the oil level is full on the dip stick however the dipstick states these levels should be checked when hot.

I'm concerned that I now have to much oil. Should I drain some oil or leave it?
I've never had so much trouble getting a reliable and accurate reading for oil levels before.

    Cheers Dan

Dan, did you read the right scale? There are two, one for upright and one for on the sidestand, best way is as per book, if you find it's over doing it that way just suck a little out, they shouldn't use oil, that's bullshit.

I've never used a drop in my 2020 lowrider S apparently the oil pump issue was rectified around mid 2019 so i would of thought a 2021 M-8 should use very little oil, although if it wasn't run in probably may cause an problem, I run mine on Penrite synthetic also
