Side mount numberplate holder - recommendations

I'm after a side mount plate holder for a 2016 Roadster (XL1200CX). I'm happy to get the factory HD one but can't find it for a sensible price online. Dealer has offered to fit it for $250 but if that's the case I was hoping to get it cheaper online and DIY - supposedly it "plugs straight into the factory harness"?
Lots of options on Ebay but most look like junk or illegal (plate mounted vertically, etc). Can't find the factory side mount like I see in the catalog at any local suppliers - Harleyheaven EasyR, etc.

What works and doesn't, anybody found a decent option for a good price?

    Thanks.

Hi Pengo, I think that the $250 for the factory one is about right, sorry. Maybe just buy it for less and fit it yourself to save a few bucks? I have the other factory side mount on my Iron. It is the one fitted OEM to the American market bikes, and was the only one available when I bought the bike in 2010. It cost me $250 back then, so paying the same now for the newer factory unit is kind of OK. TC

Does this rule (no side mounted plate) apply to imported Harleys fitted with one - ex USA? I heard it was ok (in NZ anyways)

Mate  its not legal.  If you want to do it do it.  But one day you will get fined.  The cops always win

Not much - modification wise - is legal these days. FWIW the dealer is prepared to fit it (which surprised me) as well as the accessories person telling me it conforms to the visibility from various angles rules. However it clearly fails the mounted next to the wheel rule. I'm usually prepared to run my bikes as stock as they came, except for pipes, but the tail extension on the 1200CX is a pretty ugly setup - and all plastic. Still deciding if I'll keep the bike longer term though so for now I'll hold onto my cash and wait until the 8000km service and make a call then. Probably a smarter investment right at the moment is a set of baffles for the Bassanis - between 4500 and 7500km they've really got... LOUD.

Just finished doing this on my 09 Rocker
made a bracket welded the bracket to the side plate drilled a hole the size of my axle and slipped it on
cut down the old Rocker taillight
Looking at putting a black cover edge when I find something

that looks ok BD. but am sure if I was using it . I'd get pinched. thing I don't like is if NP mounted so can read without turning head side on. sticks out. I'm sure some clown would collect it or shin them self or trip over it. ( times we live in ). your bike looks good BD!!!

Looks great, but I wouldn't go vertical mount - too obviously modified and plenty illegal (I'm told). But anything that cleans up the rear fender is a big improvement. I'm now considering mounting something on the bolt hole an inch or so up from the middle of the end of my fender. I don't necessarily want side mount just to shorten the tail piece and clean up the end of the fender. Plus I'm single seat rego so don't need the real estate on the fender for a seat.
    Great looking bike @bloodog

Back when I had a sporty, i just bent up a bracket and painted it gloss black, bolted to the shock bolt.. never had any issues in NSW and looked sleek. Cost: $5?? Had the steel laying around!

Wow nice ride mitch199 - only issue I see with the plate holder you built (and the only reason I'm not DIYing) is the need for number plate lighting. I can't make it out but I assume you had no light? I don't even ride at night but it'd be easy for the force to pickup on once they see a mod :)

Thanks mate, I never worried about lighting it (as when any light shines on the plate it reflects heaps anyway). I did however considering wiring one of these little guys sneakily on top incase I ever got pinged for it by the 5-0... was never needed though.

Beautiful - could easily jack into the old numberplate light cable for that too! Will keep it in mind.
