Best workshop in Sydney by far without a doubt. All word of mouth.

Just spare 2-3 hours if Cow starts talking to you haha. Lovely bloke though.

Jimmy is also a gun tuner. Has a lot of runs on the board.

Once I get them, the action starts.
There is an All Bike Drag's on up QLD in August. I would like to ride up and race at.

took the pistons to Comp Coatings Guilford NSW, had them dry lube coat the skirts. they did a nice job.
bead blasted heads to clean up, valves came out like new, intake port looks good stock. will press guid out & Cow will do a light port job fit larger intake valve. then press guid in and round off bottom of guid for improved flow.
exhaust port looks ok but will add some to port floor , light port job press out guid's round off end for smoother flow. fit high performance valves stock size 1.57". if you can see that line scribed in head, thats the guid to show new barrels.

got a few carb's I could use. this one is the S&S D it has adjustable air bleed and a thunder jet . I used this carb on my kick start only shovel for 15 years. that bike flew. also the S&S D is what fed the air & fuel into Australia's quickest Street Harley that ran, 9.8 138mph, no wheelie bar stock dyna twin cam frame, no ignition cut out just rider foot shift.
Bob ( DaddyRacer56 ) road it I was at SID the day he set that time.
they are a cool performance carb, very long body 2 1/4" butterfly. all sand cast alloy so very strong.
I also have a woods Rebel Carb & an S&S L series, S&S B series, shorty G. just have to wait. flow test heads after they are finished then flow each carb on manifold and mounted to head. work out what would be the best.

well got chamber to right cc so will be 10.5 comp, to go with Hammer 560 impact cams. ports been roughed up intake looked good so has just been matched to the Hammer intake manifold, welded up exhaust port floor for a D shape. getting new bee hive springs to set up for 650 lift new larger intake valves and new stock size 1.57 exhaust. setting it up for the 650 lift even though the cams only have 560 lift as want springs to last a long time. I plan on riding this bike a lot of K's and drag racing it.
still have to finish heads then mock motor up check everything, have gear box set up for quick shifts.   cow will do gear box and flywheels he is the best I know at both those  area's I got some custom set up pipes.
you can't see it in there pic's but fork have been custom tuned by Shock Treatment to the weight , & Shock Treatment also custom rebuilt the Ohlins Harley shocks, they are 14.5"
but bike will just stay stock looking. if I wanted looks I'd get a Panheads!!

also tossing between what carb to use, have the Wood Rebel ( modified SE CV 44 ) Bob Wood call's it 43.5 as that is the size he machined Venturi too.
we will be runing it on Real time, on DJ 250i to get AFR. some carb's hard to dial in perfect. you might get them right up high but they will be wrong down low, or get them right down low but too lean up hi.
will also play with manifold, I have a Hammer billet manifold made to match the CV44 & the late EFI heads. I'm a firm believer in air space, so have air there for high rev's.
could also make adapter to put an S&S Shorty E carb the new ones look good and Cow is very good at tunning them. I'm not too worried about all out HP & TQ to brag, just want a strong runner that keeps runing for good, & can get to high trap speeds at drags. as if the speeds are high, I'll just have to learn to ride it , then times can come down. but I'm not as good never will be like Daddyracer56. still I love having a go!!

Also got the Hammer Sledge billet air cleaner the 3" one lot of air space in there. I think it's the best air cleaner for Sporty, on the market. you put a big air cleaner & can see improved TQ. Cheers

Heads almost finished, have the new valves & springs, Cow at L A Cycles  did seats on his Mira Centronic. It does really nice accurate valve seats & self alignes to seat via valve guide. with a nice finish for long life. Was Lucky Rams Heads had the valves I wanted in stock, these day's no one in Australia seem to stock anything as everyone buy online, I try to support Australian Business's. but just how I am ( old school ).  Also he has to check valve to valve clearance via the cam spec's. as larger intake valves & setting up for 650 valve lift. I was hoping to have it finished to ride up Gladston for the all bike drags ( maybe next year ) . but hope to get it to Sydney after I put a few k's on & get feel of it.

Seats being cut on Mira Centronic , I like the angles he uses too improves flow & gives improved TQ.

The heads with New Valves & Springs

Head , in this shot you can now see the stock valve guide is back in and the end has beed machined round in lathe for improved flow. the chamber has also been resized so comp will be 10.5 as Aron at Hammer recommend that comp to work best with these cam's, should yield 200 pound cranking pressure as maximum. will set up with 40 thou clearance as thats safe, as when you first fire a motor up first thing to grow is the piston. if you set piston clearance on tight side, you have to warm motor up before riding off or things kiss, ok for all out race motor you pull apart regular anyway. not for me I want to ride. Also forgot to mention, have high tensile studs to hold heads & barrels to cases.
Also thought I would mention, only way to look at heads is with valves out, just looking at pic's of heads with valves in you can't see a thing. Also 30 degree swish would flow better, but I wanted flat tops , as I want to keep this bike long term , so if I want a rebuild very easy to order oversize flat tops from Axtell. Hammer told me they don't stock or make oversize's. they said the overheads for them stocking pistons for rebuilds down the line not worth the extra cost to them. to me buying a Harley was always a long term thing. you can resize these barrels out to 90", so I have plenty of meat.

ha ha, you been around mate!! yes they are still there still going strong, all the Hammer 90 inch sporty's as well as 87inch (88 inch ) are all Axtell Barrels but Hammer use CP pistons. I wanted 87" (88) so there where oversize to buy over counter if I need latter on. the Axtell heavy but with cases bored out so far you need the strength of cast iron. also I'm an old Shovel man.
Thank's mate, I've always wanted one of these sporty's with same bore as stroke, just to experience it before I'm brown bread.
    cheers

Mate the nostalgia hit hard and so I looked up Sputhe , Delkron, Branch heads, RB racing, Arlen Ness , Baker,Lienweber(spelling ?), Patrick racing, and a  bunch of exhaust manufacturers most are still going man.
    Nostalgia tripping.

    Delkrons out unfortunately!
AS for piston clearance, I thought it was the other way around.

Loosey goosey for race motors that dont have time to be broken in, warmed up properly, and will be torn down a lot.

A bit on the tighter side (within tolerances) if its a street motor that will be warmed up, run in properly, and will go for a bit.

The build looks awesome, love all the details.

Im still trying to figure out what I'll be doing with the Evo on my bench, whether to just put it back together with pistons n cam, or get head work, bigger lift, stroker etc.

Hi John.R & thank's , sorry I was talking about the top of piston to the head clearance ( squeeze ). your right they run race motors with more piston to cylinder clearance, I just leave that up to Cow at L A Cycles he has built me motors for Harley's for a long time and they last a long time & perform. I was reving a twin cam he built for me to 7,200rpm all the time & stood up to it had almost 100,000k drag racing & riding all over the place when I sold it.
The Axtell barrels probably need different clearance as they run hotter but I road a Shovelhead 1 million km's that had S&S big bore cast iron barrels so nothing new to me.

They run sportster ( or used to ) race motors with a lot of clearance piston to cyl when Harley sponsored the twin sport or roaring sporty racing. I think every race meeting they got new rings, every second race meeting new pistons they revel them to 8,000 & because of loose fit plus high rev's & the fact oil scavenging not quick enough. by end of the race all the oil had gone from the oil tank to the oil breather catch can. ( that was a normal thing for high performance Harley's in old day's, was told some used an electric pump to pump oil from crank case back to oil tank faster , on Bonniville Harley racers and they saw higher speeds.

Over the years metallurgy & piston's have improved, these day's forged pistons grow less than the old day's, I can remember when Wiseco had the nick name ( while they grow )
back to the project, I'll be over the moon when it's up and runing, won't be easy to ride as stock sporty wheelbase, just have to learn to ride it & no idea what power it will make, just hoping for fast trap speeds at drag strip, with me dyno easy quick way to check tune, but the long black dyno is the real test.

Ah that makes sense, thanks for the info.
Somebody else recommended LA Cycles to me recently, I didn't realise that he was 'Cow' that I've heard referenced so many times on here. Sounds like the man when it come to long lasting donks.

I've got forged Wiseco's in my Evo, and have heard the stories and nicknames (I heard Seizeco haha). I think as long as they're clearanced correctly they're fine. Can't run em as tight as cast irons.

by the way, thanks for posting up all the pics and details. This is the type of stuff I like reading on HD Forums.

hey John, I meet Cow back in late seventy's early eighty's, has been Harley all his life and has raced Harleys so wealth of knowledge and not just old bikes they custom map EFI , he rides a M8 too. these day's Wisco good.

Cow at L A Cycles has done more work, valve to valve clearance set ( as fitted larger intake valves. now C C ing chambers, for 10 . 5 to 1 comp.
he will mock up motor check all clearances. before building it. will be compleat bottom end to top & gear box, as he is the best I've seen with Harley gear box's, after he does one it shifts like magic.
I've been riding Harley's a long time. when I ride new they bore me. but when set up right tuned right and set up to handle & ride. I enjoy riding!!
want to take this to the track to see what trap speed is like ( that's my Dyno!! the long black one, or the salty white one, but have never got to the salt yet ).
but don't get me wrong I love all Harley's, and love motor bikes!!
