Declining sales

HD has released the following numbers their world sales fell 6.7% in 2017. 2016 sales were down worse again at 7.9% this shows a 3rd year in a row of downward sales with the forecast that the decline is accelerating. 262221 bikes sold in 2016 to estimated 231000 in 2018. HD banking on the new live wire to pull them out of a hole

Indian must be having an effect on their sales too. From everything I've read and the reviews that I've seen, Indian are making some pretty good bikes. Indian is direct home grown competition, that hasn't happened to HD in a long time.

OMG PB. I'd better hang onto my old Commodore now that Holden has closed and shutting down dealers. When there are none left on Gumtree, it'll be worth a fortune..

Myself and a few mates have been saying for the last 15 or so years, "the bubble is gunna burst on Harley's". Well I think it has . Go onto bikepoint or bike sales, there are more Harley's than Hondas for sale. Don't believe me? Take a look. If you can't sell your bike you can't buy a newbie.

This kind of discussion comes up fairly regularly. Our fav brand's sales are down, must be some problem etc.
A very quick google tells me that new bike sales in general are down:
http://www.mcnews.com.au/australian-motorcycle-sales-figures-2017-3rd-quarter/
Now seeing as how we can plainly see most manufacturers are suffering from a sales slump, we can assume that either:
a) all bikes are no longer in fashion, or
b) there must be some world wide economic slump where people aren't spending.
Markets will swing with how an economy is performing. I wouldn't panic, bikes will probably swing back. But if they don't and eventually all bike production stops, then we're sitting on pieces of history. Either way it's a win-win.

Electric bikes are silent death, -pedestrians can't hear nuffin' and get mowed down more easily.
as a push bike rider i have noticed the same problem.

Those Indians not a patch on HD. Plenty of bling but something not right in the design department
Indian is to motorbike riding what masturbation is to sex. Sure it gets the job done and you're shamefully crying afterwards, but you know there's a better way to experience it

So if you had say $40k to "Invest" in any of the cars you mentioned they would have to appreciate by at least $1200 per annum to stay level with the safe option of parking your money in a bank account @ a guaranteed 3%. This is of course assuming that the "investment" was bought in cash and not funded via a redraw facility or loan that would cost you around $2800 @ 7% per annum. And the interest, either P&I or interest only are NOT tax deductible as the ATO does not recognize it as a deduction. If it flys, floats or fucks, rent it and never own it!. LOL

Your correct no one would declare the proceeds as income as such but once the funds hit your account they start to generate a profit . That profit then shows up on your tax portal and again they grab their bit of cake. There would also be no 50/50 rule applicable for CGT due to it not being a recognised investment with the ATO. Lastly i am not much of a bank person, in fact dislike them a great deal and have very little money with them so dont know the answer sorry. I can tell you that shares have averaged 11.52% PA If your portfolio matched the All Ordinaries Accumulation Index and income and growth are all reinvested you would have $380k and that's nearly 5000% for your $7500 investment

Returns vary when you consider that $7500 spent in 1982 is ~ $25,600 in
todays
dollars.

Now that good ol Trump is formulating a trade war it looks like poor HD is gunna get another kick in the nuts from the EU, at least.

Yes HD stock dropped very quickly when the news about retaliatory tariffs in the EU against some US made products (specifically naming Harley Davidson) were announced by the EU.
Not great for HD riders in Europe either because they'd see price rises.
