Just a heads up for any late model Sportster owners who mighy be considering a side mounyed number plate.  I installed a genuine HD side mount kit to my 2017 Roadster the other day and although it is nice quality and a good fit, I was dissapointed to find the wiring did not connect into the bikes wiring loom even with the supplied adaptors. I had to cut and solder. A bit poor for a $300 genuine HD item.

Welcome to the wonderfull world of HD. They sell bikes all over the world and they have to meet that countries compliance so not all the parts are plug and play. As i found out with a rear tri light on my street glide...

I think PB is right.  I suspect that the side mounted license plate isn't allowed here.  It is in the U.S, so most likely only 100% fits their models.  Side mount license plate is a good look though.  Post some pics.

hopefully attaching my side plate this week, a mates bending some steel for the bracket today. I have cut down the old tail light so just running the original break taillight wires this was an easy way out for me.
side plates are starting to be a popular choose here in Alice Springs  NT

I see them around from time to time in Melbourne (legally they are illegal, but i recon you might get away with it most of the time if your not riding like a dickhead - but it only takes a couple of tickets to to hit the wallet hard) , but in my mind they make the left rear of the bike look like chit.  The bad look overides the cleaner tail end.

I'v had a good read of the Vicroads number plate mounting requirements and can't find anything prohibiting a side mount. Provided the plate can be read from a 45 degree angle in all directions it looks legal to me. Am I missing something?

Just a quick read for you..........
Side mounts are allowed but the plate needs to be horizontal to be read at the 45 degree angle. Plates must be visible from 20m away and be mounted horizontally, no more than 1.3m from the ground. Number plate covers must be clear and not impede photographic devices. If not in Qld $341 fine
