FP3 Autotune, are multiple autotune runs any use?

Recently I did an FP3 autotune run on my bike. I did a 300k run over a good spread of roads city/hills/highway. Bike ran like crap duing the autotune, especially at low revs. But from what I've read this is normal when doing autotune. I flashed the learned values several times during the autotune and the bike started to improve. At the end of the autotoune, I flashed the autotune map to the bike.

The bike is now running the best it every has. Fuel economy is also great. I managed to get 285k's from my last tank and range was still reporting 23k's left. And most of that was during the autotune. On filing up the tank took 14.09L, so I'm very happy with the results.  Yesterday I thought I'd do another autotune run using my autotune map as the base map. But I was surprised to see the bike ran like crap again during the autotune.  It's like the autotune process was starting over again. Is this what others have found with doing multiple autotunes with the FP3?

And has anyone found any real improvement by doing multiple autotune runs?

Not much help but I am planning to do my first auto tune this weekend. I had a small user error issue on the install and the guys were great at getting back to me via the email app. Maybe flick them the question (will take overnight for them to reply).

    Good luck.

I have experienced exactly the same as you KC. I communicated with V&H and they replied saying that there was little benefit to be gained by doing multiple autotune sessions. So I ran in autotune for a few weeks over multiple rides and now I’m a very happy camper. However, now that I know what I know, in reality the FP3 unit becomes redundant after you have tuned the bike, unless of course you change or add something to the the bike that impacts the bike motor (intake/exhaust/cams etc.)! Seems we paid a lot for something that might only be used once. I confess that I thought I was buying something that would constantly be trying to optimise my tune, but sadly that’s not the case. I’ll use a dyno and expert motor tuner next time. I have now removed my FP3 as leaving it attached brings nothing to the party.

BTW. KC, if you open the app (no need to be connected to the FP3) and go to the faq section it pretty much says everything you need to know. I contacted V&H because my bike felt like it had sand in the motor, not oil, it was so rough during my autotune sessions. One thing I noticed is a lack of “news”, last post by them was in March 2017, probably find that the FP3 will be obsolete soon and they will launch an FP4 for the new Milwaukee 8 motors.

I tried it a couple of years back.. each auto tune got progressively worse and richer mixture.. do once, leave alone.
If you make changes I’d suggest going back to the previous map and retuning that.

Was wondering the same with the Power vision.  Have done a couple of tunes and to be quite honest I haven't seen $680 of improvement.  Runs quite rough on idle for a little while too.  Sorry didn't mean to change the subject from FP3.

That's good info.  I naturally thought it would be a good idea to auto-tune from a previous auto-tune map, but good to know it's not recommended.  I've also been reading about Dyno tuning with the FP3 and you're spot on with the software.  The FP3 will allow you to edit the same tables as any other tuner.  The reason Dyno tuners don't want to use it is because it won't interface to their Dyno equipment like some other tuners will.  So this means to Dyno tune with an FP3 would require the tuner to put in the values manually through the phone app.  Understandably they wouldn't want to do that.
If V&H provided the capability of downloading and uploading tables to the device through a computer, it would make it easier for tuners to use.

Hey guys, I just fitted my FLHTK M8 with Vance and Hines Power Duals and Hi Output slipons and a Arlen Ness Big Sucker intake.  Flashed the canned map from the V&H app and it runs sweet.
Do you reckon an auto tune session would be of benefit seeing though the pipes and headers are V&H so their engineers should have done a pretty good job?

I just finished running the autotune on my sled. I saved the first couple of sessions & then hit finish after the last session as the bike was becoming a pig to ride. Strangely enough the bike was worse to ride with the autotune map flashed & I went back to a canned map again. I will try the process once again but was surprised by the lack of results that others have achieved.

Two tanks of fuel is a good run and that map looks pretty good to me.  Did you make sure you finished the auto-tune, not just did "apply learned values"?  The map only fully gets applied to the bike once you do the "finish auto-tune".

Tried the autotune process again & still don't think it is any better than the canned map I started with. The other problem is the longer I ride in autotune the worse the ride becomes. It backfires & hesitates every time I open the throttle up & becomes a real pig to ride.

I run the TAB Autotuner on my Vrod, Plug N' Play, self tunes, all you have to do is ride.
Did have the SE tuner on there, just annoying when ever I change my baffles, I have to go back to the dealer for tuning.

Happy to report the custom tune has made her a happy camper again. It is nice & smooth to ride, which is predominately what I was after.

    Hi Guys
Sorry for jumping in here it's being a while since i've been on here and can't remember how to post a new thread . I bought a V&H fuel pak fp3
a little over a year ago and tuned my bike after making the usual changes , pipes etc. and put it in the cupboard in its box.
I pulled it out the other day to do a diagnostic read and after plugging it in i got nothing, it seems to be totally dead, no LED's nothing, and the warranty is only 9 months.
    Anyone else had this problem?
I sent a email to V&H in the states a few days ago but nothing as yet.

Hey guys, just thought I'd pass on the great after sales support I got off Vance and Hines regarding the FP3.  I have the usual mods on the Ultra and looking to fit a Zippers Redshift 468 Cam, after looking at the list of cams for the M8 the redshift 468 isn't there. I contacted a Tech via the chat portal and told him mods and what I was wanting in the way of a cam and it was sorted within the hour.
He had me upload the base map (not the autotune map) follow up with an email (all done on the customer support function on the phone app) explaining what I wanted. Within half and hour I get an email from him telling me to go back to the bike connect via the app to the bike, download the new tune. Voila all done. He said 2 tanks of juice through her and 3 x 20mins autotune sessions and thats it.
I have reflased my bike with the autotune map cause the cam job wont happen for at least a month, but the tune is sitting there waiting to go.

    Cheers
    Robbo

as great as these "auto tuners" are Rob, you are leaving a lot on the table especially when throwing in an aftermarket cam.

I'm a big believer in Autotuning (especially wide band setups like PV target tune) but NOTHING comes close to an experienced operator spending a full day tuning each individual cylinder properly.

Depends on your expectations of course. Once you ride a properly tuned V-twin you are converted IMO.

My plan is to install the Redshift Cam and use the custom MAP supplied by V&H, do 2 - 3 auto tune sessions, then using either a TTS or SE tuner have a dyno tune session and then upload that tune back into the FP3. This will allow me to keep using the FP3 which has some great features and also show just how good or bad the V&H MAP and Autotune was.

I'll contact V&H to see if what I am planning is able to be done. I thought the custom V&H map would be a good starting point for my tuner guy, the bike would be tuned on Dyno using the TTS, all I want is after the tune is completed plug the FP3 back in to use some of the other functions and if possible have a copy of the Dyno tune settings on me phone.

After speaking with V&H I can do the above if using SE Tuner but not the TTS.

V&H Tech said next month they are releasing software for Dyno Shops called Fuelpak pro which will enable Dyno tuning using the FP3.

I know I'm digging up an old thread here but this is similar to what I'm getting. Set the base tune for my stage 1 ran it for a couple of weeks then turned on the autotune fully expecting it to run shitty but while the auto tune was going was actually the best it's ever ran. I've finished it and re flashed the ECM but it's not quite running as good now as it was. Populated a fairly good chunk of the map and did plenty of varied riding. Will have another crack at the auto tune starting from the base map and hopefully get better results this time.
I'm not going for all out power with this tuner, just like the idea of not paying to dyno tune every time I do another performance mod.
