Travelling to SA?

A bit of advice needed gents.

The missus & I are travelling to SA in early March, unfortunately not on the bikes but taking the Landcruiser. Yeah I know...... shoulda taken the bikes but it's a long story. Anyway, I'm on a tight schedule, 8 days return to Devonport. I've never been to SA before, never driven in Victoria either, jumping off the Spirit early morning and hoping to reach Mt Barker that afternoon via M8 Ballarat, A8 Horsham & M1 Mt Barker. No plan for sight-seeing on the way at this stage, just catching up with the ol' man for a few days, maybe look around the area, Hahndorf etc, then thinking of coming back with a stop-over somewhere on the Great Ocean Road. That's the rough plan anyway.

What are your thoughts? Any better suggestions on the route? A good place to stop on the way back? I'm open to suggestions.

    Cheers, Roo.

Can't help with route suggestions, but Hahndorf is worth a stopover for pig knuckle and steins of beer.

if your doing the gor, detour into timboon from port campbell and visit the whiskey distillery, ice creamery[ short walk between both ] strawberry farm[on edge of town...small town] and if staying in port campbell a feed at 12 rocks beach bar is always good [pays to book a table]....and the scenery on the gor is good too.watch out for international visitors....not the best drivers.

This is what I'd do if I hadn't been to SA before, so if you staying in Mt Barker there's a few directions you could go,

Backtrack 40-50 k's east and there's the Monarto Open Range Zoo,

Head North to the Barossa, go via Hahndorf, Birdwood, the Birdwood Motor Museum is a must see, if you want to see the Barossa's Valley be sure to check out Menglers Hill Lookout, worth a look, Tanunda is nice town with German Heritage , Seppeltsfields Winery is good for a gander,

South you have Strathalbyn, very pretty country town, then further south there is Goolwa, Victor Harbour, all well worth the effort of getting there,

East you have Adelaide, plenty to see and do I'm sure,

I reckon that should take care of a few days sight seeing, enjoy your stay,

Bring your riding gear and I'll loan you a bike and take you riding through the Barrossa?

Or I'll drive you both through so you can sample the local drop.

    What a great forum.

And yes, the same applies if you're ever over here. No Roadking though, just a lazy ol' Superglide.....

    I'll be in touch.

Well gents, we're home. Unfortunately we couldn't find time to catch up with Lofty (PM sent Lofty, Thank You). We had far too much to see & do in a short space of time. Spent 6 days with my Dad & his wife in and around the Adelaide Hills, did Hahndorf, Strathalbyn, Monarto Zoo, Birdwood (motor museum is amazing!) etc, etc..... what a beautiful part of the world. Great food & grog, good people, good roads and decent drivers. Stopped in at Old Tailem Town on the return leg, what a place! Vinyards on the Coonawarra, a night at Portland & Apollo Bay, try finding accommodation along the GOR at this time of year...., dodged the foreigners, Victorian bushfires, sandstorms, boarded the Spirit at 1045pm after she came in 2 hours late then they needed another 2 hours to clean the ship after a rough voyage across. But all in all a great trip. Thanks to all who suggested things to see & do, we had a ball. Looking forward to another trip, maybe with a bit more time up the sleeve.

    Cheers all. Roo.
