Softail with thunderheader torque dip

Hi all,
I have just had a dyno tune done however i have a torque dip that is known to be present on Thunderheader. I have heard of bending the baffle to eliminate/mimimise the dip however i dont want to ruin the tune. Will bending a baffle change the tune enough to affect the engine?
I know bugger all about tuning so i dont want to do anything and throw away the money spent getting it tuned.
Thanks in advance.

At what rev does the dyno show a torque dip?
EFI or carb?

its an efi 2008 model. 103ci. dip is from 2000-3250rpm.

no way of knowing whether the change to the baffle will affect only the area where the torque dip is
only way to know for sure would be to get another dyno tune
a DIY tune would give you a fair idea but would need a WOT run to show if anything had changed above 80kpa

It was a full custom map as I had just had S&S570 cams put in replacing SE255's. Short shots were swapped out for the 2 into 1 thunder header.
I actually dont mind the dip as it means the bike has manners around town when I just putt around but that would go against wearing out the bearing like you wete saying. I dont have a tacho but I dont ride and labour the engine.
If i could gain torque without spending coin thats just a bonus.

I had a similar torque dip when installed 2into 1 on my 111cu S&S chopper I think it is caused by reversion where spent gases return up the exhaust spoiling next clean air charge coming in. I experimented with my exhaust short Dan Moto 2into 1 removed baffle and installed 5/16 bolt in exhaust about 2 inches from tail pipe it fixed torque dip. Probabley similar to bending baffle up as thunderheader guys have said to stop reversion. Hope this helps I dont think it would affect tune much. MY S&S 111 is carbed........... Ive also noticed Bassani 2into1 s have bolt in similar position

This is the dyno print out. The bike rides nice enough so I'm tempted to not mess with it.
I didnt check the cranking pressure after it but it was 205 R and 210 F. When i used to back off it would pull up real quick like an engine brake due to the compression, now it rides nice and doesnt have a engine brake haha. By the calcs it should have dropped to about 193ish psi.
Im thinking I will bend two and then it I dont feel the change i will bend them back.

210 is good cranking pressure , if you can get good fuel, I was tuning my twin cam carb up at 215pound cranking , 195 safer, just need 180 pounds to make power if lower not as good. you might find this hard to believe , but my cranking pressure increased, when I dropped my primary ratio using older evo clutch hub. I put that down to motor spinning up quicker doing the pressure test.
some pipes make it hard to tune, I don't know a lot about thunder header only what people online have wrote, so no idea, torque curve looks a bit ... dippy till 3.2 rev but as I said if it was mine I would have asked for the operator to start at 3 and looks ok from there, you see the print out is landscape if your tuning and checking I ask for portrait then you really see the dips, also I like to see a timed run where they print how long motor takes to make the hp & tq, so I can see how quick it will respond. you could try playing with the baffles in the pipe, I've done that with duels and tampered end slip ons, that helped.
I've not been to west Aussie yet been to south Aussie , weather on the day's it was tuned looks low humidity must be nice and dry heat like the bush.
cheers enjoy

Dunno how you ride but a lot of folk routinely between 2,500-3,500 rpm, where you old set-up was better.
I wouldnt be happy with a dip like that. Those thunderheaders are known for that. You could bend the baffle as previously mentioned and/or experiment with lollipop to see if you get some bottom back (at the expense of top).
If it was me, I'd change to a better pipe. There are 2-2 systems that would work better. Or get a GOOD 2-1 pipe. Not all 2-1 pipes are equal.

The old setup hat alot of torque down low but would ping its head off. The pipe has good reviews but is known to loose a little down low. The only other pipe I was lookong at was a Rhinehart racing 2 into 1, but $1500 plus said t didnt want that. The thunderheader cost me $500 delivered second handhand and to be honest looks good, sounds incredible and performs great in mid to high rpm. I always knew I would loose some lowend torque with the cam and exhaust change was just hoping to flatten it at the bottom end although I prefer the way it rides now. It's fun where as it got boring before having all the torque at the bottom. Now as the revs rise so does my heart rate hehe.

Have you asked the bloke who tuned the bike? No use getting a tune your not happy with then walking out and having a whinge. He should be giving you first class advice, listen to what the tuner says, if it means fucking the pipe off then so be it. Every one wants the noisiest hard arse pipe out there then chuck a spas when the numbers are fucked. Good luck.

I wouldn’t be too happy with that tune mate, don’t know anything about the thunderheader but I would have (and did) went with a D&D pipe but I’m biased!!

That's fair enough I enjoy riding it again so I'm stoke with it.

you wouldn't need a retune for the baffle mod you describing
just do it and ride you be fine, but your tune file needs some timing and Ve changes in that rpm rANge

Cheers mate. I did explain to the bloke tunimg it that its my daily rider and I don't care for the numbers, purely wanted reliability namely no bloody pinging that I've been putting up with. So He explained the dip was due to the pipe and he hasnt had much to do with a thunderheader, he prefers a supertrapp. I supplied the pipes and he recommended the cams but I tell you what when I want to open it up damm it pulls nice, I'm loving it.

If it were my bike I would try the bending baffle tabs you would be suprised what a small adjustment to flow can do. A lot of thunderheaders out there with that small change to increase low end torque. If you don't like it simply change back. Cheers

Yeah I'll end bending them and seeing how it goes.
I have been interested in putting the bike down the strip at some point, even more so now pulls like crazy.

Koas, your right, name callings childish, sorry for that. I'm just trying to get my bike running as best I can, was chasing advice and none of your post helped my plight. Have a good new year.
