So I am contemplating an option of installing a sidecar for my soon to be new 2018 street bob.
and as the title says, I've just finished reading up about the regulations on line.

Getting all the technical NSW regulation side of things out of the way, I would appreciate some compass as to where, what and how to move on from here. plus further questions that I weren't able to find answers to..

-Would detachable sidecars allowed on the road? / such thing as quick release for brake lines exist?
-is sidecars something typically to be purchased brand new or built?
-recommendations to where to buy new one & brands / or buy parts for the build?, Typical cost?
-pros & cons of metal, fiber glass and plastic body?
-Where would be the best place to purchase 2nd ones? / is there owners group or buy & sell web page where I can seek option of purchasing a 2nd hand ones? (not many on gumtree)

    Thanks very much in advance.

    Hi Jess,

A few years back I was contemplating a chair for my then BMW R1200C.

I was exchanging emails with "Premier Sidecars Australia" who were very helpful.

Just do a "Google" for their website.

    Hope this helps.

I owned a Suzuki outfit (GSX1100G shaft drive bike and sidecar) when the kids were all at home and younger.
It had a leading link front end and a rear car tyre conversion and the shaft drive had been machined to lower the gearing.

It carried me and 3 kids to various places and they loved it but they grew up and got bigger and it got used less and less and I sold it.

First... no matter what a sidecar looks like it is not a motorbike, it doesn't ride like one, it doesn't corner like one, it doesn't accelerate like one and it doesn't stop like one.

But it will let you 'ride' with motorbikes and carry a couple of passengers and attend bike events.

But a Street Bob is about $24000 and a sidecar is about $8000 plus $2000 for options plus $2500 for a leading link front end and that adds up to $36500!
You can buy a brand new Harley freewheeler trike for not much more than that.

It's possible to do it cheaper than that, start with a 2nd hard Suzuki GSX1400 or Yamaha XJR1300 and add a chair and a steering damper instead of a leading link and you can do it for maybe $15000 but it won't ride as well.

Personally I'd go along to one of the sidecar rally camping events and ask around, there's always someone with an outfit for sale.

Mr j. There's an Ultra and sidecar in Adelaide. Been for sale on Gumtree for some time. I'll go and have a look at it for you.

I've had this combo since '81. Had the sidecar refurbished by Sean Kelly of SRK Engineering, O'Connell, NSW. It's a DJP sidecar with an auxiliary fuel tank and boot. Originally with quick release knuckles. I only had sidecar off a few times. Tyres obviously wear differently and effect solo handling.
