Wide Tyre Conversion

    Doing a 200mm wide tyre conversion on a 2007 Sportster XL883L.

All good on everything (swing-arm conversion kit, fender, 200mm tyre) and now need a 16" x 5.5" rear wheel.

I have my eye on one but before committing to it I need to confirm axle size is compatible (wheel not cheap so don't want to buy in error).

I believe the Sportster is 1".

Can someone please confirm that for me. Any help from the forum would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Rear Axle size on any 2007 Sportster is 1 inch.
The bearings are sealed double row bearings OD 52mm, ID 1 inch and 21mm wide.
They went to a 25mm rear axle for the 2008 model year.
    Hope this helps,

    Cheers, Will

If you are getting a new swing arm and new wider wheel, you will also need a new axle so Why does it matter what size the 2007 sporty axle size is. Would you not just get the wheel and axle to match the swing arm ? But get some advice from a professional.
I would love to do a wide tyre conversion sometime.

    good point Sproket !
your going to need a longer axle get the thickest you can!
would also be a good idea to have an out rigger sealed bearing support made, these bolt to outside of drive Sproket . and help to take stress off axle, they take the place of the wheel spacer but they put your wheel bearing as close as possible to inside of swingarm to help stop a bent axle.

Some info and pics on Dyna 180 rear conversion for Sporty - scroll to the last few posts.
Mine is a 2016 Forty Eight but the concept is the same for older bikes.
This required only a Fatbob rear wheel, bearing kit, some shims and 180 tyre to complete.

I wouldn’t use a 16” wheel , go 18” . With a 16” you get a lot of tyre bulge , wich makes the tyre wider in the wall and it will rub on the belt or chain and the frame with a 18” it is a low profile tyre and the tyre dosnt have the bulge problem

    21 x 2.15 i wonder if it would handle good ...
    Maybe 3 wide.

180 handles better than the 150 rear in my opinion . Not so twitchy

The bigger wheel does look cool.
Cropduster i hear you can get someone to cut the original rear wheel weld in a strip and make it wider.

I stayed with the stock front wheel thats why i got the 48
