High Fuel Consumption after 1200 Upgrade

    G'day all,
I recently had my 2012 883 SuperLow upgraded with an SE 1200kit as a 71,000km present. Before this I'd had an SE stage 1 kit installed at 35,000km and was averaging just under 23km/ltr. Have now travelled 1,400km with the upgraded and am getting around 16.5km/ltr only. I know installing a 1200 upgrade is similar to getting a "new" engine that will be tight and need running in. Also it makes sense that 50% increase in engine size will use more fuel, so am I unrealistic/impatient moaning at these figures? Do I need to get at least 3,000km up before a true set of figures emerge?
On the other hand, apart from  the low fuel warning light coming on around 180km (instead of 250km beforehand) the extra power is awesome. Am finding it so much easier keeping up on HOG rides, with just a little wrist movement.
Any suggestions or comments will be gratefully accepted.

Taah, Hilly, for that.  Will keep tabs for a bit more to see what happens in the longer run.

The increased burn rate isn't because you are enjoying yourself is it :)

I'm sure my rate of 20 km per litre is about to die in the arse when I do these new cams next week ;) LOL

Maybe the new tune is on the rich side to keep it a little cooler while it is running in ?

Best bet is to ask the guy who tuned it.

    Cheers

Geez, my 883 must have a drinking problem. I've been getting 16km/L. It's a 2012 model with just on 2500km. I might need to blow the cobwebs out of it. Good thing I have a 700km round trip this week.

I've been getting around 16 to 20km per litre depending on riding habits and fuel type.  Also, I've noticed significantly better mileage using premium compared to standard fuel.

hard to say, I have a carb 1200, but it's bone stock for se air kit and se 2 slip on's plus cow at l a cycles jetted the carb. motor 14 years old and breathing a bit heavy like oil out crank breather, not bad but happens also I don't ride slow, think tank is same size as normal eft and bit bigger than a 48. I have just did 230k on this tank still have not had to turn on reserve gas tap , or pet cock, I don't do the k's per 1 lt thing I calculate laters per 100k get 4.4liter per 100k to 5 per 100k depending where I'm riding and what load is. but I'm not going to cry if it starts drinking more when I tune it up, drink up little sporty, I'll be getting cow to get more horses out of it soon.

Thanks Krash Kincaid, your figures seem to be what I should be getting.  Will have a talk with the service guy who did the upgrade.

    G'day All,
Took my bike back to the dealer after 2,000km to check the mapping.  Apparently there are two 883-to-1200 maps, one for stage two cams and one for "standard" cams. Mine had the stage two map which gives an overall richer fuel mix. They replaced this with the standard which gives an overall leaner fuel mix. When the mechanic took the bike for a test run he found that the rear engine flange bolts were missing.
492.6km later I used 25.92 litres of fuel giving just over 19km/ltr or 5.26 ltr/100km - I rode hard, in windy conditions, so am pretty happy with these figures. I dont know how much the different map or the "open exhaust" caused the higher fuel consumption, but am glad I may now be able to get average figures of 20km/ltr
Thanks again to all who sent their thoughts.

Great news, those numbers sound a lot better.  Missing bolts is a bit of a worry, good thing that noticed that.

I get an average of 200k's, and that's including 40-45 k's on the fuel light, out of my 12.5L tank. So 16km/L
maybe i should get my tune checked as well, but it's already been dyno'd a couple times

The reason you boys get shit mileage is you make up for the small capacity engines with big capacity balls and ride the marrow out your bikes. Only natural fuel consumption is going to take a hiding when you're at WOT most of the time and scraping foot pegs. Keep up the good work.

Get a good dyno tune brother.
