Gidday all ... First up I readily admit to being a complete novice regarding Tourer Stereo / Infotainment systems , so please bear with my Novice questions .
Recently bought brand new M8 Road Glide Special , love the look and power ... Full Stage 4 Motor .

Have been accused of being long winded in my post but only trying to learn , so apologies for that ... With the Systems are they Bloody Useless without Headsets ... When riding last week , beautiful clear day , thought will give this music thing a go ... 100 K's per hour , stereo just about full blast , couldn't hear a thing except for indistinguishable noise .

Has the 6.5 Stage 2 Boom Box Upgrade thingy by the way ... Amp was friggin 900 bucks ... Was part of the deal .

Have heaps of other questions but main one was do these Systems really only work properly with Headsets and of course 2 Sets if you have a partner you don't mind talking to ... Occasionally ...  And should one stick with Approved Harley gear or go with someone like Senna , who apparently make Harley stuff before Harley rebrands them ... Supposedly .

We have a guy in our town who cruises up and down the main street with music blaring out of his speakers, interrupted only occasionally as he twists the wrist at random times, clutch in, to make sure he is truly the centre of everyone's  attention.
As I understand it, this makes him mega cool.
    You could be that guy!

Tim, I've got a bog stock 17 SGS with the totally standard 6.5 Boom box and have no problem hearing the standard speakers at 110k's - maybe there are some adjustments needed on your set up with the amp etc?
WRT the headsets, unless yours is hard wired which is only available for the rider, or you have the newly released HD 'Wireless Headset Interface Module' which works for BOTH rider and passenger you can't use any of the voice commands or answer phone calls or have the music thru your headsets anyway, so the headsets are purely intercom units between yourself and passenger, some units (SENA) do allow grouping to other riders allowing communicating.
Yes the HD gear is just rebadged SENA stuff.
I have only read 1 review of a guy fitting the new handsfree module to his 2017 bike (standard on 2018 bikes), but it was very favourable and I will probably go this way when funds allow, I will use my Aldi headset units originally, but will most likely upgrade to the SENA 20S units later on. I was doing research on fitting the wired set up for the rider, but would prefer the handsfree gear for rider/passenger.
Like has been mentioned, wind buffeting and helmet fitment can make a difference to sound quality - also pipes :) how loud is that thing fitted to your bike? Umm I meant the exhaust ')

Congratulations, you've bought a great machine but Infotainment ????.

Try using your Ridingtainment system a bit harder, you know, that right handed twisty grip thing :)
Full throttle on a Stage 4 M8 must be entertaining.

Cheers and enjoy your new ride.

Thanks guys for feedback ... Have never had one of these Systems before ... Not really interested in low speed posing Bonkerz , will leave that for your mate , Lol .
Just figured it's there might as well learn a bit more about them ... Never know when the GPS might come in handy .

Have read a little about that New W.H.I.M. module so will research that a little more .... As usual though when they sell you a new bike they don't really go into the cost of all the extras ... I know , my job to take all of that into the final Discisson ... It's all good .

I have a 2012 Street Glide with the standard stereo and I can hear it good at 110 k's on the highway. I will do an amp and speaker upgrade after I have sorted the suspension. I do wear an open face helmet which does help with the volume. As mentioned you probably need to sort out the right screen as well to keep the wind noise quieter.

TJU. good question, I'm on the old version RG- 2012 and rarely activate music, but can hear at 100KPH OK. no probs, wit standard installment.
What I did have issues with was my bloody feet lifting off the floor boards going for a fast run. They would float from bloody wind, so lower leg fairings have helped there.
Sorry.... music, I bought those Aldi gizmos, and when I work them out will try them.
Long time ago, (embarrassingly so) I rode a motorbike with an army shoulder bag with cassette player, and speaker leads, with speakers in my helmet, like 47 years ago....Now that was ground breaking then.We have come a long way from bag music.
And I too do love music too, but have always said, can ride a bike with no music, but cannot drive a vehicle with no music, as very boring..

Doc ... you would be surprised at how quite the pipes are actually ... was one of the things i said to dealership that i might need a quite Baffle , but as it turns out it certainly has a nice deep rumble down low but i reckon the Bassini 2 into 1 `s i have on my TwinCam are louder at crusing speed ... mind you i haven`t cracked her open just yet , just finished the 1600 Klm motor run in this weekend and she goes in for the first service and Dyno run early next week , was all part of the sale , will be interesting to see the figures especially the Torque figures ... the Cam in the Stage 4 kit is surposedly a happy comprimise between a Hp and Torque Cam .

Ratbob ... as above , looking forward to opening her up thats for sure ... as mentioned earlier i haven`t had one of these systems before so don`t usauly concern myself with this sort of thing but also as mentioned , it`s there so might as well use it occassionaly .

Steve ... the screen situation seems to have come up a couple of times so if it really gets under my skin i will put the original screen back on and see what difference that makes , currently it is running a extra short screen ... so nothing really apart from the Fairing itself of course .

Baloffski ... thanks for the heads up about the feet situation ... this thing is surpossed to produce more Hp and Torque than my S & S 110 Hp Twin Cam and from early feelings she is going to pull strong from low to red line better than my other beast , so should be fun ... All i have used in long past rides is use Moulded Ear Plugs attached to my phone and listen to music that way .

From what the Dealerships have said price wise we are looking at around $ 800 plus for the 2 headsets and another $ 400 plus for the new W.H.I.M modual that is surposedly good for Hands Free and cable free devices ... so not cheap thats for sure ... might be sticking with the music from the exhaust for a little while and play around with the settings a little to see how clear the system can get .

    Cheers .

I have a stage 1 upgrade with amp on my tourer but it was useless until I fitted a taller screen.
It's also pretty crappy if I've got the visor on my open face fully down, I need to have it a couple of notches upwards.

I'd think it'd be even worse with a full face.

Just one question on this - WHY????
Listening to substandard Music box mounted on a MC while riding is a silly concept - Your surrounding probably hear your music box ten times more than you are as a rider due to the delayed sound barrier you speeding away from
    - Most would be annoyed with the random twist of your right hand while volume i on 110% - A tip: try to enjoy the scenery, smell & sound (from your engine and your fellow riders) and toss this boom box in the lake (your bike would look hell cleaner as well without this kind of fluff)

If you cant be out on a bike riding without music perhaps bikes is wrong - get a good insulated car instead (still comparable bad sound, but better than what you got)

Maybe he likes a bit of shock jock radio and getting fired up as he rides. Or the gardening show. His ride. Plenty of folks dig jives when riding.

James ... Know what you mean at low speeds , have to play with the clutch and throttle a little more than what I am used to ... As part of the package they had Defiance grips on ... Feel a little notchy , not sure if it is due to the fly by wire throttle set up but just a little different than what I am used to but overall pretty smooth compared to my 08 S and S Twin Cam .
To Ghost Wolf and others ... Don't totally disagree with your sentiments , been riding with out music for over 37 years now ... apart from ocassional long ride and music from my phone and ear plugs ... BUT ... As already mentioned a few times now the System is there , why not learn how to use it ... Bought the Bike for it's motor , supposedly good handling ability and of course colour and General all round looks , just so happens to come with system as well ... Is that really that bad that you feel you have to bag another rider ... Jesus there are some argumentative Old Bastards on this site these days .

Oh well I suppose if everyone agreed about everything then it would be a strange world hey  .

Have heard from a few the speaker placement on the Roadglides doesn't work that well even with upgrades. Have upgraded speakers only on my Streety and it works a treat. Was never one for earbud type music on the bike but nothing beats music on a long ride. Its good enough now that wifey loves it and has ditched her ipod and earbuds.

I totally disagree that it's a silly concept, I really enjoy listening to music while riding. It richens the riding experience for me. No one is asking you to do it, enough said.

FWIW. I have the 4.3 system on my 2014 Ultra. I can't hear the stereo to save my life through the speakers when I'm on the road at any speed AND I reckon you look and sound silly playing it loud in a built up area. I'm happy for those forum members that CAN hear the stereo. I have a separate GPS but that means I can't get vocal instructions.
I love the system when it's combined with normal ear plugs and the hard wired helmet headsets. I can charge the phone in the glovebox (or have it in my pocket where it connects flawlessly to the bike via bluetooth), listen to the bike radio or music on the phone, check text messages, make and receive phone calls either via the contacts list or use siri or the onboard voice recognition system. The background music makes the riding so much more enjoyable.
I found the intercom system system with passenger useless with VOX, however, I am prepared to give it another try with the quieter pipes.

    Recommendation
If you don't have the hard wired plugs and headsets, get them, or get the new bluetooth adapter setup.

On my 2013 road glide the sound quality was poor and when going quick it was hard to hear.
Good wind protection fixes part of the problem - screen and lowers.

The other fix is a decent stereo, amp and speakers. I did my research on hdforums.com   They have an audio section and it has a lot of info. The experts there hate the harley stereos and upgrades so I went with their advice and got myself some bike specific gear that was plug and play. Upgraded the head unit, installed an amp and some good speakers. After that the sound quality was good and the volume was incredible at any speed. To the extent my ears would hurt and I'd have to turn it down

Gidday again all ... As the Original bloke who posted this thread I just want to say thank you for most of the replys ... There's always going to be some who don't agree but that's Ok as long as it doesn't get to narky or personal , Lol .
For my situation as mentioned a couple of times I am definitely New to the whole infotainment set up but certainly seems like a far better screen and one of those Bluetooth adaptor module things and head sets may be in my future if I want to get the best out of what is already there .

Can I chuck another curly question in here ... Mine has the hidden antena ... Good , Bad , or no different ... Again I need to gain a bit more time with the new beast to get a better understanding but have hit the scan feature a couple of times and it just keeps going through channels and not really settling on any station ... So wasn't sure if reinstalling external antena would make much difference .

Ghosty ... Pretty sure I know what your reply will be , Lol ... But feel free to fire one across the bow .
