Pod Filters in NSW

    Hi all,

Doing a trip from Cairns to the South Coast of NSW and back in the Spring.

I know that the Mr Plod and the RTA down in NSW frowns pretty badly on after-market pod style filters on cars, and issue hefty infringement notices.

I have the after market big breather pod style air filter on the Dyna, and just wondering if this is going to be a hassle, what are you guys running down in NSW ?

I have the STD air cleaner here, but would rather not have to re-fit it and do all the re-mapping work again.

Any feedback on what it is like down in NSW with running the big breather style of pod filter would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Ken

Hilly, you are correct but Sydney Cops don't care.

I got Pulled over for an "RBT/RDT" on my Low Rider S.

Whilst he was there he spent a good 5 minutes rambling on about my Javelin type air filter and how it's a pedestrian hazard whilst my drug test was been done (which fell on the ground off his bonnet, very scientific and non contaminative mate)

I just shut my mouth and didn't add fuel to the fire by saying it was standard and as such met ADR rules., he said it had to go but didn't receive a defect for it.

OP I think you will be fine, pass the attitude test and you can get away with a fair bit ;)

Just have a brochure for the FXDLS with you to prove they come from the factory like that.

And plus 1 on the attitude tip. Be polite.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

When I was younger it didn't matter how nice you were, they still booked my arse ;(

I like the brochure idea :)

Might sway the point politely perhaps, as long as they don't say but that's not a FXDLS..

I'm not intending going through Sydney, so maybe that will help.

Planned route is Cairns, Townsville, Charters Towers down to Emerald then onto Parks via Injune, Roma, Lightning Ridge, Dubbo.

Then after seeing "The Dish", across to Cowra and the coast via the back way to Crookwell and Braidwood.

Trip home is up to Bathurst via the back Crookwell and Abercrombie roads them Mudgee, Coolah, Narrabri, Moree, Miles, Theodore, Dululu,  Blackwater and then back home via the Emerald Charters Towers route.

Plan is 5 days each way, about 5000 Km round trip.

Hoping the rain stops by then :)

    Cheers

    Ken

Mate, did a route similar to yours last September Canberra-Townsville via the inland route. Saw plenty of coppers circa Dubbo-Canberra but not one after that. Few coppers around Braidwood (essentially the entire road between Canberra-Bateman's Bay), because that road can be busy with a fair share of idiots. I will go out on a limb and say they generally don't hassle bike riders unless you give them a reason too.
If you haven't sorted your accom yet, try Gilgandra over Dubbo. Cheaper stays. Get the mrs an opal from Lightening Ridge.

Enjoy the ride. Watch the Roos around Roma/Injune.

Thanks for the heads up guys.

Been from Canberra to the coast a few times and know that it is a hot spot.

When I rode the bike home from Brisbane hardly saw any police after I got out of the Brisvagas Valley.

I don't intend to be on the road after 4pm if I can help it, the earlier starts will be a higher Roo risk, but can stay at 90 till 730 or 8am and then they should be away in the scrub again.

I'm on my desktop, and haven't got my excel route worksheet with my stops and such in it, but thanks for the tip about Gilgandra JFE, I think I had two options, one was the free camp rest area 50 kays east at Mendooran, or the Terramungamine Reserve just to the North of Dubbo.

I'm free camping and bush camping the whole trip due to budget restrictions, so don't know about the Opal, have to see.

So if you guys know of some hidden gems along the route :)

Ken, a few month's ago i road a ridgid motor mount Sporty ( pre rubber mount ). from Cairn's to far south coast NSW .
Stuck to the coast till sunshine coast then went past Australia Zoo up to Towoomba & down new england Hwy. then used the new Hunter Freeway hooked up to Sydney Newcastle freeway ( i won't use Sydney motorways on a MC as easy for me through the traffic on a MC. never saw a Cop all the way. i see Harleys with those pod filters everywhere in Sydney so must be ok. enjoy the ride i did!!

Thanks for the further info fellas.

So rain sock on :) Yeah strange, but if that's how it was tested...

Was thinking about  running with it on anyway, sort of a pre filter.

Was just thinking about bikes with crash bars sticking out, highway pegs etc etc.

If not fitted as standard are they illegal too ??? Not thinking of fitting them, but they can be fitted to a lot of bikes.

I really don't like the coast road, no where on the highway to pull over and camp really, and way to busy, I have done the New England a dozen times I guess, Newcastle to Brisvagas overnight.

Hopefully I'll just put through in "Stealth mode" ;)

Just received my new small lightweight tent, see this link for the details, no guy ropes packs up really small.

Just a few more bits to sort out, keep getting piped at the post for a cheap tank bag on gumtree ;(

    Cheers

I was just admiring that tent too. 2.25 kg and apparently easy to put up are selling points!

Give us a yell when you're on the South Coast Ken. I live right on the water and have a camping area and bathroom/laundry attached to the house. You're welcome to stay a few days.

Bowlo is 3 doors away. Good Harley service shop in town (Nowra).

    Ride safe.

Cheers Nutty, I will do, PM me a number to txt u on :)

Nowra is about an hour north of were I'm going, Moruya just south of Batemans Bay. But nothing like a day trip when the relos piss me off ;)

I'll want to do an oil change when I get down there too, oil is cheap, new engine is not ;(

As to the tent, Biker Bits on U-Tube does a good review on it,

his channel link  he has some good reviews and videos.

    the tent review

    enjoy ;)

Good to know Steamer, spend 7 years in Newcastle (Belmont) myself.

Hopefully it will all go somewhat according to plan :)
