Mate the choice to take the coast road is a good one, as much better than the straight through, Dukes Highway etc. First time I rode from Adelaide to Melbourne was 16 years old on an XS1 650 Yam, bloody good ride along coast. Take your time, stop at some iconic spots, like Beachport, Southport, and many other ports. Weather should be kind to you, but can be a boring ride, but you can make it more interesting if you go off some of the major roads down south.I'll be doing similar round that time frame too. Book beds if doing the motel/self contained route, as is bloody busy that time of year..."Schools out for summer!" Can do it in one sitting but better to stop a night and cruise.

Me and a mate did exactly what you're proposing, earlier this year. We started north of the Mornington peninsular and rode to Sorrento, got the ferry to Queenscliff, rode gor intending to stop at Warnambool. But a big storm hit us so we putted into Apollo Bay.
Then road on thru gor and national park thru to robe. Robe is a great little town and the robe hotel is good to stay and eat at.

We then followed the coast north until getting to tallem bend. Good roads and interesting sites. From here we headed north.

So we did two nights along there as part of a 7 night ride and it was a good time. Have fun.

Let us know when you are here, if you need a garage, tools, or a safe place to stash ya bikes whilst you look around, I live 6 Kim's from the city, just near the bottom of the freeway into Adelaide.

Port Fairy is also a good place to stay on the way across, the Caledonian Hotel has Motel style rooms
out the back and good meals, rooms are $80 a single $90 for 2 people.

As a interstate rider, a stay at the Robe hotel wont disappoint great budget accommodation and food, friendly local crowd in the bar. Did this on last years ride to Moama Nat catch up.
