should go good.
Stock Compression is 9.5:1 I'm pretty sure, what will the change of base gasket give roughly? The 585 would love a bit more compression I would imagine.

Some of you blokes are bloody mechanically cluey.

Heads and throttle body can be an option in the future
Crank needs to be addressed now like Hilly says
If you build a motor that is any good at all ,the crank should be done

I thought crank was only an issue when nudging 130/130 or you are still on borrowed time at say 110hp?
On the US boards guys doing hi comp 107's builds etc putting out huge power, all on stock bottom ends, probably with crazy runout too.

not so much the hp as torque and compression braking
there may be some big builds on standard cranks
all on borrowed time

S&S 585 cams would be better in there than the SE 585 cams... and they like 10.5-1 to 11.0-1 comp

Weld and true the crank while the cases are split and then go gear drive cams and never have to worry or touch the bottom end again. I wouldn't hesitate if I ever had mine that far apart. She would be case bored (and S&S crank fitted) for a 124" in a flash lol

I'm impressed mate. How do you stop the bike from falling down from the ceiling?

Hi All ... will be interesting to see how this goes for you Hot And Heavy ... don`t mean to hijack your thread here but was courious about a couple of comments from earlier peoples replys .
I think it was Brash who asked the question about bottom ends that some were saying were needed to be done if getting any signifercent motor work done ... now i am paranoid at the best of times but some of the comments have got me a tad concerned ... obviously if one has a motor totally pulled apart and has the money then sure get the Crank sorted while you are in there but like Brash had mentioned i haven`t read anywhere that one should go to that much trouble or expense for the type of motors being talked about in this thread .
Like i said i can be Paranoid at times ... My motor is a 106 S&S Piston and Barrels ... S&S Super Stock Heads ... S&S 585 Easy Start Cams ... Fueling Lifters ... Screaming Eagle 50 mil Throttle Body ... near on 10.5 to 1 compression ... recently changed to a Screaming Eagle Race Tuner ... had it Dynoed when i had the Power Commander PC-5 and got readings of 110 Hp and 120 Ft Tourqe ... standard gearing and Standard bottom end ... Oil Changes done religisouly every 5 thousand K`s .
The ealier comments were sussgesting these motors are running on borrowed time ... is that the general consenous from the people in the know or can i breath a little easier in thinking that it is not nessercery to touch the bottom end for the forseeable future .
Apoligies again to Hot & Heavy for detouring off the the original thread .

it's a valid topic.
Say for instance HD Aus are putting 117ci kits in the 110's.
HD warrant that kit for 12 months I'm pretty sure. We have all seen these twin cams with near no runout on some bikes with 40,000km's on them and on the other hand even new bikes nudging the upper limits for runout spec out the factory the way the cranks are pressed together.
Do you think the tech installing the 117 kit will measure runout while the camchest is apart and say "hmmm this one is nudging 0.040" and maybe think twice about putting 115hp/120ft lb through the thing or what? Because ultimately if that engine did shit the bed they would be footing the bill. Do they even measure runout as part of the install?
It's something I have thought about before and probably fitting for this thread considering H&H build is gonna be making some mumbo too.

Out of curiosity hh, how do you find the breakout in twisty mountain roads compared to your dyna?

Look forward to your review on gear change HH, many reckon best bang for buck spent that mod

30/70 definitely on the cards for me too. Sounds like it's a match made in heaven for the Dyna's.

Thanks for the response H&H ...
If DynoHarley is reading this do you have an opinion on the bottom end question i raised earlier .

Thanks for replying to my question hh. You're a lucky bloke with two hotted up toys aye
On the issue re cranks, dealers warranting the 117 upgrade kits and checking crank run-out, it's a really good question. Surely they'd have to check it?
I remember when my 2007 fatboy went to the dealer for a dyno tune after a 107 upgrade. The 2007 cranks and run-out were notoriously worse than subsequent years I since found out. The bike made a lot of torque early and carried it thru. The dealer tech/tuner was concerned that the crank might twist. Peak torque was around 118 flb from memory and it made it pretty early. The 117 is making more again but there are also blokes with 120r engines using the same bottom end without dramas (and without any warranty)

You make a very good point H&H ... If the crank issues were as bad as suggested then like you say we would have heard a lot more about it ... Which I suppose is what I was trying to find out ... Anyhow good luck with the beast .

Hi HH, Leroy here, I've just changed my login name.
I'm no expert either, just wondering cause you'd discussed compression earlier.
I've been looking at the SE585 cam you chose for my stock 110 Fatbob which I reckon runs out of puff a bit early.
A member of the States CVO Forum switched to the SE585 on his otherwise stock 110. For compression he installed the cam advanced by 4 degrees so instead of the intake closing at 36 degrees it closes at 32. You get the lift advantage for the CVO's larger valves, the same duration etc. Results attached, about 10% power gain, bugger all torque gain but it's hangs in there.
Hope you post your results for us.
Enjoy your build, Cheers Leroy
