Picked this up in early March this year, lookes like a good fixer uperer,
The "story"was that its been sitting in a shed for 17 years, the clutch cable was over adjusted and has damaged something in the clutch or box area,
and it shouldnt take much to get it running...
l want to get it looking good and on the road by 27th OCT. for the trip to Albury, for the 75th anniversary of the 1942WLA,kicking off at Phil's Garage,,

it was a negotiation, l swapped some shovel ,panhead, parts and a little cash, left and right tanks went back to the seller they wern't part of the deal, the rear cylinder handed back to seller for exhaust port repair. l can pick it up any time now, i'll show some photo's of the rebuild as l go...its going to need more than just a few adjustments it needs a complete re-build...

Stripped the trans down to the bare case, found some metal teeth and other metal bits laying in the bottom, looks like at some point its jammed and taken some teeth off, The cogs are in good condition so must have been replaced at some point, second gear bushing needed replacing as it was flopping around on the shaft, the selector fingers also wobbled on their shafts and would not select gears and needed proper shims and lock tabs,a new sprocket & lock tab, gasket kit, top inspection plate bolts and washers, finger shaft retainer, thats it , back together and ready to install,

The engine now,,, all the primary inner outer covers and primary chain are off,,,pulled back and forth on the motor sprocket by hand ,had about 1/8" side play, so its stripped down now, cases are near perfect condition, found some alloy pieces laying in the bottom right side case ,looks like its had a piston fail at some point, no scoring in the oil pump or scavenger pump so thats a good thing,

The flywheel thrust washers are wrong hence the excessive side play, a nasty groove in the right side bearing race has happened because of it, l didnt want to fit a new bearing race cause then it would need line lapping, & l dont have that tool, so a scribed mark on the case and race was put, then heated the case a bit with a hand held gas torch, pressed the race out and removed the minimum amount of metal to get a smooth finish on the race about 3/32", placed the race in the freezer for an hour left the case in the sun for an hour lined up my scribed mark and pressed it back in the same position as it came out, because of the amount of material removed the bearing cage was now protruding into the case to far, l had to make made an extra thick thrust washer for that side anyway so stepped the inner the 3/32" ,all works good

The flywheel assembly ,, big end & small end bearings and bushes have prematurely worn due to the side movement, ive put it aside and will reco it some other time, l have another complete flywheel assembly l fixed up a while back so have installed that ,
in case you need to replace your small end bushes
panhead and shovelhead are the same i.d. and o.d. the only differance is the lenth (pan/shov) are longer , l cut a pair of quality rowe items to wla lenth and used them,

Bottom end reco'd now, all within tolerances,, the cam chest area next, not much to do there its all in good shape just a set of new cam shims cam cover gasket and swap the chrome cam cover for a natural alloy finish cover....

Awesome stuff, much credit to you. When I was in the Army, I could pull a missile apart, but I wouldn't do what you are doing now lol.

The frame has had a plate brazed over the seat post area, so to be able to use a seat post and solo seat some mods to do on it,

Cleaned up the inner down tube for a new seat post bushing, Turned 1 up out of brass cause l dont have bronze but it should ware o.k. The down tube had a dent in it and had to be knocked out before l could insert the post, as well as many years of muck in it, l looked around for a WLA seat post but didnt like the cost of a Taiwanese one and an original just to hard to find;
ive got enough steel to make that part, it was time involved and had to be in the mood to tackle it but works as it should. The hardest part was cutting the slot by hand.
machined shoulder so weld sits in flush
will turn up the seperating bushes that go between the springs when the springs arrive
The seat post at the back is an original panhead item, to get the look l eye balled it ,and went from there,, in looks similar to a wla's..PANHEAD/SHOVELHEAD
posts//springs are 1.3/16inch.dia. flathead are 1.1/16inch.dia .. pan/shovel wont fit.....
