Had trouble with the button/swith, (on fairing bike, no doubt similar with others) ,,,, when checking if there are any codes etc,, would work , then would not work etc,,,, Got the shits a few times , and nearly pushed the f-cking swith through the fairing  .... I thought I would just buy a new switch ,,, did a little googling ,,, a forum in the states , a guy with  same problem, said unsrew rubber cover,, (take care switch does not fall back inside faring, if it does, no big deal, just got to remove the outer fairing) ...  give the switch a squart of wd40, leave half an hour ,, then give it a squart of contact cleaner or brake cleaner , leave half an hour ..... Bingo ,, the switch goes through the codes procedure as it should, and goes through the trip procedure as it should, etc ....
