A mate's thinking of getting a bike.

Ol' mate wants a bike but first he's gotta get a bike licence. He's spent a lot of years racing allsorts, from dirt bikes as a kid to sprintcars more recently. We've been working on him for a while to get him on a Harley. Problem is he's about 6'7" tall. He was thinking of buying a LAMS approved Street 500 but maybe that's not a good idea given his height.

    Anyone got any suggestions?

if he is a heavy lad at 6'7" he could apply to the registrar for an excemption, I had a mate who was on P's for less than 6 months, he was riding a 109

my missus was riding her Can-am Spyder (998 rotax) on her L's, again, an excemption from the registrar, she also ended up on a trike only license (no P's)

Maybe nothing suitable in short term but when he's ready. Maybe a soft tail or some model with foot pegs and or forward controls to push his legs forward. I don't know about boards for tall fellas. Good luck in your efforts to get him on a harley.

If he can stomach it, get a piece of crap, do your time, learn the lessons, get off the P's and then splash out on something good with forwards. Why tie up the $$ too soon?
Saying that, if he wants to do km's asap, my crap first bike advice starts took shoddy.

Yamaha  650 v star. Biggish solid bike. Looks like a small Heritage ( to the uneducated) they go well and are reasonably priced with good resale.
A mate of ours tried to ride his wifes newly purchased  Street 500 not long ago. Almost ended in disaster. He's 6'4"  and there was just no way the bike would fit him.
His brother is 6'6" and is the only person I've seen who makes a Streetglide look small.
Learn on something that doesnt really matter if it gets bumped or damaged, then spend your coin on what u really want.

If he gets a street 500 take a photo and put it on here. Would be a laugh.
Otherwise, I'd get him a exception like Soapy said. 6 Foot 7's too big for a LAMS bro.

    Kawasaki Vulcan S.

650cc, retuned (more mid torque) ninja engine, they go well, handle well.

Is a cruiser and has the option of 3 footpeg positions to accommodate different sizes.

    Best option IMO

Wished I had bought one of these instead of the street before the NRS

I bet if he test rides  500 then he won't like it.

A big road trail is a good bike for a big man, I'm 6.5" and have ridden many bikes and found that ground clearance to be a definite factor in the learning process, that's for a long legged man.

    Thanks for the great feedback.

I originally thought Vstar 650 too but my missus has one & I feel cramped for room on it and I'm only a short arse. Maybe with forward controls it could be an option. Will take it around so he can get a feel for it and get a few ideas. I suggested Bobbing the Vstar might be an option and might increase the saleability after he's done with it.

The big road trail would be good but ol mate was trying to avoid the dirt bike thing, he has a long history of dirt bike racing and understands recovery times are much longer than they used to be, from recent experience.....

The Kwaka sounds like it's worth a look. Not one I'm familiar with.

    Thanks guys.

I bet you could Sparra. :-)

I've already suggested he get a bit of rebel in him, go through the L & P courses and just ride a big kids Harley. Not the right thing I know but hey, since I jumped back on the bike about 18 years ago I've been pulled up once. And none of my bikes would have passed a noise test. You just gotta be smart around town I reckon, although I've been very lucky at times on the highway.

Age makes a big difference. I used to get pulled up daily when i was a young fella and later into my twenties and thirties it was not rare.
Not so much nowadays, RBT only. Touch Wood.
