Passing lamp wiring faaaark

Had a crack at installing the passing lamps on the 07 fatty today, installation was easy but the wirinr instructions and extra bits and pieces had me screwed.  Wired up the blinkers, all good away they go, but following the wiring instructions from HD ahd me fucked.  I ended up not ceonnecting the passing lights as I ran ouit of time.  Now there are jumpers leads two into one terminals and all sorts of stuff that come with the kit and also the globes, which are a seperate purchase.  Now Im not completely stupid but be buggered if i could work it out.

The passiong lamps on the bike have a male spade terminal which is screwed to the body of the light casing, an earth I would imagine, then there is the power lead which is a male bullet terminal that comes up through the centre of the blinker, nothing supplied in the kit which  was brand new seemed to fit.  I ended up with two wires (the ones that power the passing lamp globes) and it would appear nowhere to hook them into.  Now there is a spare female spade terminal coming off the headlight that has power to it when the light is on, common sense tells me this is what needs to be wired into the power lead from the passing lamps, I can deal with that but I still have an earth terminal screwed to the side of the passing lamp and no where to hook it up to.  The only wire in existence form the globe is a male spade terminal, where does the earth go adn am I right in thinking that the pwer from the globes gets wired up to the female spade terminal off the headlight.

Buggered if I can see where I went wrong, has anyone done this job before and can help me out?  I know Ive made a balls up of it but Im hoping for a big recovery :)

you wire them as normal lights (would be black earth and I think the bulbs are white ) then from your headlight a wire from your low beam (or high depending your choice) and that runs to the switch that is positioned at the horn bracket area then back to the new lights you can make a Y piece to join seperatley or just join both together and then to the swich wire, NOW if you run a relay to run the lights, that goes between the switch and the lights

    good luck

Thanks smutley. Makes sense but the earth wires that are screwed to the inside of the light housing have me stuffed. The plan is to just hook the power leads up to the spare headlight terminal at the back of the light which has power, no issues there as they will be on as long as the headlight is on I imagine, so join both wires to a terminal to plug into this, but those earth wires have me stumped. Hope its not a silly question but what advantage is there in fitting a relay and what sort do I fit. Im a complete numpty with electrics sorry. If it helps I will take some pics of what Im banging on about in the daylight and post them here.

So heres the pesky little fucker Im talking about,  sorry about the orientation of the pic but cant seem to change it.

Anyway, The wire with the bullet terminal coming up thru the headlight mounting bolt is the power wire for the globe,  the flat spade terminal with the white wire in the foreground is the wire coming fropm the back of the globe (power one would imagine) cant you can see the edge of the globe in the pic.  There is only one wire coming from the back of the light.  The black wire with the female spade terminal is no doubt the earth as it is riveted straight onto the passing light casing itself.  SO my dilemma is, do I join the two wires I described as being power wires together (male flat spade terminal and male bullet terminal)  and if so where the hell does that earth wire get attached to.  Ideas ?

Think I will cut the bullet off and put a female spade on smutley, sounds like the fix. Now there is a possibility now that you mention it that there is another terminal behind the rubber cover on the back of the globe to plug the black earth into, will have a look tonight. As for the wire being back to front I dont believe so as it is in the supplied wiring loom. Thanks mate, further investigation to take place tonight, will keep the thread updated. Cheers.

Hey binnsy, if not just solder(Or crimp) on a loop connector for the black earth wire and hook onto the holding thread for earthing, and as Smutley/mutley suggest trans gender other connection, gently, yuk...Male ta female..
Bought a bike in Townsville many heavy years ago, and had to ride back to Mackay, ended up at night, no bloody headlight. So I shorted out the R.H blinker with lens cap off and following the white line for many hours. T'was surreal, with cane burning off in background, so anything is possible. Is that a 96 you have? And music is good as well.

Well finally success, apart from the pic is sideways again !!  Thanks all for your input.  Locked myself away in the shed after work and here is the deal.  Joined the two mismatched power wires with a binnsy made jump lead, the earth wire screwed to the inside of the light casing actually fits onto a spade termianl inside the rear of the light, (failure to search is a failure to find)  joined both power wires from the lights together, ran them to the switch on the tin, the power came from the spare wire already fitted to the rear of the fatties headlight and woo hoo.  Let there be light. For those using this wire it is the low beam wire and the passing lights will go off when hi beam is selected.  No biggy.   I was quite happy until the right light sometimes came on when I switched them on and then sometimes didnt.  Here we go again thought I.  Turns out if I took the light out of the casing and pressed on the rubber boot at the rear of the light it them came on.  Looks light a bodgy light from HD.  Will take that back and get a newy but looks like the mystery is solved.

Thanks to all for your input and advice to help me on my way.  The wiring instructions that came with the kit are useless, not sure what the story is there.  Anyway just need to line em up and Im off.  :-)

Good stuff binnsy. Looks good too mate. Always liked the look of the extra lamps on the fl softails. Usually their instructions are pretty good
