Hello everyone, I am in need of some help. This is me sitting on my dads bike in 1987, my dad sold this bike not long after this photo and was his last bike due to the growing family etc. My father has recently passed away and I have really started to get into bikes. I'm just cruising around on a Yamaha cruiser until I get my full licence but when I do I want the same bike as my old man. Just after some help finding out exactly what it is. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry to hear about your father.

He had good taste in bikes that's for sure, the FXR to this day regarded as one of the best Handling HD's made. Was a real riders bike that one.

Finding one is getting harder, but not impossible. There are still a few out there.

The aftermarket support for these in the US is absolutely massive, you could more or less build a new one from Aftermarket parts.

I'm not sure its an FXR....but the family is right. I would say a 1984-1985 FXRS.

    - I have an 86 FXR and the Speedo is mounted on the tank, plus the stock FXR did not come with a Tacho in 86 (so I an assuming this applies to earlier models as well)
    - Also the Cast alloy wheels were another sign of the FXRS, while the 86 FXR has spokes.
    - The clutch release arm is on top of the side-cover/tranny so its no later than 86 as I think the 87 onwards went to a different cable access system.

The FXR giveaway is the side cover behind the young boys foot!  Thats a sure way to ID an FXR/S

Gotta agree that the 84-86 bikes are 'bitsa' bikes. A LOT of shovel parts used on them; which oddly enough is not such a bad thing given the maturity of the shovel at that point in time.

I believe that these early Evo engined bikes are the best...pretty much indestructible (I have run about 115-120HP) through my stock cases and pistons without her blowing up.

Thank you so much for everyone's help, I can't wait to one day hunt one down to ride. Also for the help on that paint job. That would be even more great to find

that black and gold looks sweet! almost like a John Player Special, plus the tank badge is the bees knees.
