I have a question for he boys

I have ordered somenee parts from the US, priced just under A$1100.

The issue I am having is tracking the parts they have been held in customs since the 4th of January. I have never ordered anything over the $1000 threshold and never had a package held before.

Does anyone have experience with this and can let me know the process?

    Cheers Dylan

Normally they ring me to get me to pay GST and Import duty. Once I have done that they release them from customs and i get them a few days later.

You haven't mentioned who is shipping the parts.
    USPS, FedEx, DHL, UPS etc.
All except USPS will handle the customs side and charge accordingly.
If it is USPS, they will advise by phoning you directly, then confirm by email if they do have contact details and send a letter if there are no contact details.
Contact your shipper and ask them should it be one of the others.
You stated the value of the good is $1100, therefore the goods are liable to GST and and any duty dependent on the category, plus the cost of raising the relevant forms.
Once the fees payable are paid, goods will be released.
Not good news, though hope it helped clarify.

It would appear I lucked out and they were shipped with USPS.

I placed 2 seperate order and paid 2 lots of shipping to keep the total of each under $1000 to avoid the GST but I only received the 1 tracking number so I am assuming they were both bundled into one package.

I'm yet to receive any contact from anyone. Is there a number I can call? I have tried google but I am not entirely sure what I should be googling.

Cheers for the replies boys. I'm keen to get these parts here!

Generally (years of importing guitars) they will be in touch with you when they are ready, contacting them usually does little to speed up the process.
Splitting shipments doesnt usually work either, if theres multiple components going to the same address, from the same shipper that gets combined into one for value.. Its all luck of the draw, I had two guiatsr values at $2k each come from japan in December, both sailed through customs without a cent to pay.

Not sure how it all works mutley these hit Sydney before Christmas and we're then sent to Tokyo before being sent back to Sydney. It's all over the place haha!
Guess I just need to play the hurry up and wait game.

I ordered a Power Vision on the 28/12/16 and it turned up on the 10/01/17. That was cheaper than your purchase so no custom delay's and was with USPS.

    Cheers..

We have progress. I received a letter today from Australia Post basically saying I need to do an import declaration and send the paper work to them.
They will receive that calculate how much I owe and send me a bill, once that's paid the goods are released and sent out to me.

I have no issues with paying what I need to pay, just hanging to get the last of the parts here so we can make some more horse powers!

Shouldn't say that till you get the bill. It's not the cost of duty and GST that will shock you, it's the cost of applying the duty and GST.

    Just an update.

I was invoiced today and charged $225 gst and a deceleration processing fee. Overall I don't think it's to bad a price to pay.

I'm thinking I will call this one a draw, I don't think I paid any less than I could of got the parts in Oz but I don't think I paid anymore than I should of either.

First time having to pay import duties and we will clock it up as a learning experience.

I think it's great they've finally made sure we pay too much for our shit no matter which way we go - like all good Aussies were supposed to.

    $90 "import declaration fee"

Basically a fee because they had to look at my paperwork and process it all I assume!

I wonder if sometimes places think up a "fee" just for the sake of it

Yes correct, it's an example of fees relating to the three posts above mine. not meant as a list of fees payable by australia post.
