Dunlop American elite

I had a Dunlop American elite 200/55-17 fitted to the rear of my Fatboy in July 2016 and have just had it replaced with another after 24,282 ks

I ride every chance I get in all conditions and spend a lot of time in the mountains and even though I have 2 inch overs and the boards moved forward, there is plenty of scraping and the Dunlop feels better than anything else I have tried.

At $300 fitted, it's maybe the cheapest of the lot too.

I read somewhere that the American Elite was made to rub Harley's face in it for ditching their tyres on some models.

I found them to be easily as good, if not better than the Pirelli, on my bike anyway.

The Pirelli would let go much easier in the wet than the Dunlop.

I also had a vibration from the front Pirelli at 70 kph which was annoying.

Below is the milage from all rear tyres since the bike was new.

1st tyre. Harley Dunlop, 10,612 ks

2nd tyre. Pirelli Night Dragons, 13,549 Ks

3rd tyre. Pirelli Night Dragon, after cams fitted, 12,052 ks

Yeh I had a Dunlop Americana Elite 200, 55-17. on my fxst. So far only done about 5000km in normal dry roads & pissing rain. I am very happy with how it performs. I normally run Michellin Commander 2, front n rear. But could not get one for rear on my lap of Oz last year. HH Dandenong suggested the Elite as they heard great reviews. I am happy with it

Have one on the front of my street Glide, steers a touch strange but is wearing well.

I have had Dunlop American Elite front and rear on my 2008 CVO Springer for 6+ months now.

As paulybronco says , steers a touch "different" , but I'm used to it now , felt that riding home and put it down to the newness of the tyres

Rear feels fine , no problems in cornering for a 300+ Kg lump !

Front and rear hardly worn , front still has the "centreline" strip visible so wear rate is excellent

That is a good review Drac. 24,282Klms seems like a long way on a tyre. How far down do you wear them? I have seen people wait till the canvas is showing as an example, alternatively I like to change em when they just look worn(a mm or a couple of mm of tread left) and get that scalloping look to em. I did see one of those American Elites when I got my last rear tyre fitted and must say I was impressed with the depth of tread when they are new.
Dunlop elites used to be one of the top choices for tyres back in the 80's I remember, them and Pirelli Phantoms.
Just put a new Night Dragon on the front of mine but the back hasn't got too much more in it. Might have to try the Dunlop next.
    Thanks for the review.

Ran it down to about 2mm
24000 k is hard to believe but it seems bang on. I even went back though all tyre reciepts and checked them against the total milage of the bike.
    Buggered if I know
See what the next one does I guess

I am about to put a 2nd one on the rear of my Fatboy (front elite still good) and will also be replacing both OEM dunlops with elites on the sporty. They're a good tyre and I have had decent k's out of this one.
    Cheers.

The american elite are a good tyre, they are a multi-tread tyre,a lot softer on the sides for better cornering grip...
they feel like your riding on a squared off tyre the way they tip into bends
