Changing the fuel filter

Got myself a new fuel filter "module" and a few new screws to replace the overdue one in my FXST.

I have the correct manual for my year bike 2008, however it seems there is a superceeded part. You no longer remove a clip to take out the old filter and replace with a new one, rather you replace the whole unit. Looked at a clip on you tube with a Yank showing how to change a filter on a different model but he fucked and fiddled around so much, even cut fuel lines, I could not bear to watch it all.

So! Any tips from anyone who has performed this task recently would be much appreciated. I plan to do it with tank still on bike.

Otherwise I guess it is just, "plough on in, to the uncertain future" as usual.

it can be tedious, my dyna 2010 still has the retainer clip and you just replace the fuel filter, you shouldn't have to cut fuel lines, but drain tank as much as possible, pull unit out as much as possible

chriso may know on the FXST as he has and done one

Robots, From what I was told at the shop those retainer clips are now obsolete.

Anyway, it sounds like a fiddly bad language inducing task I have to look forward to.

Just done mine on 08 softy couple mths ago, tank on bike, pulled unit out unclipped filter , replaced and unit back it, as robots said a bit fiddle but no big drama just take ya time.

Don't know anything about being obsolete and replacing whole unit. Don't make sence to me , the filters are made to unclip?

No you shouldn't need all that, what did they slug you for that?
I think my filter (and o-ring) which is all you need, was about $35.
Not a bad job, just a bit fiddly, trickiest part for me was getting it all back in the tank into its correct position, you have to lower and turn it at the same time ...
I did find a good video on the net showing how to do it...

I will definately be asking some questions when I go back to the shop. I pulled out the filter from the old unit to have a look and it was clean as a whistle!

Let you know what the response is.

47,000 ks have owned since new, so never been done before.. Reckon it would have done the same again without drama. I suppose some petrol stations might have dirty tanks and I've been lucky.

Yeah mine at 36k ish was real bad. Pretty sure I put up photos....
Lushly told me when it was on the dyno that it needed doing as he noticed the pump was taking longer than it should to prime.
Again, he is the man.... Spot on, primes instantly now.

No, they do not look spotless. Thanks for posting the pics though. If you dipped the new filter in petrol it'd prolly look darker instantly,

Hard to tell how clogged is clogged,. Workshop manual says replace at 40,000kms so that is what we should do, for piece of mind if nothing else.

I'll be doing mine every 25k I reckon, at 35000 it was overdue, not just dark in colour but had a fair amount of sediment in it.
Like I said too, the pump was taking noticeably longer to prime.
Yes must be shit fuel down my way even though we pay way more than metro areas !!

Daggs, can't say Iv'e ever been to a petrol station/servo and seen someone inside the underground tank scrubbing it out. Doubt you even can!. Confucious say, "don't buy fuel from servo at bottom of valley or close to sea level"

Was back in the dealership today and asked why I was given the whole unit rather than just the filter.

The mechanic said he tried to just get the filter and o ring but they are no longer available by themselves and you now have to get the whole unit. The reason being that .....

"too many people have botched the o ring when  re-assembling, probably not Harley mechanics, mainly people who work on their own bikes"

Maybe this has just happened in the last week or so?

I would be interested to know if anyone else gets the same spiel from their local dealers or if they can just waltz in and buy the filter and o ring no probs.

Big difference between $35 and $150 to do the job.

Cheers Robots, never heard of quickfix spares before. Might be worth buying a couple from them.
