2013 Heritage Classic DTC's

Hey guys, after a bit of advice. A good mate recently bought a late 2012 (2013 model?) Heritage Classic 1HD vin bike. The bike appears standard apart from Freedom true dual pipes. It has always popped quite a bit under decel, and runs fairly warm- haven't been on many TC's to compare it to, so don't know if normal temp or not - but otherwise is very nice to ride. He recently had to fit a new battery, and had the CEL come on not long after, when he has checked the codes he noticed there were 3 in the memory. He cleared them and not long after 2 of the original codes came back - they are P0661 and P1475. Did a bit of googling and they appear to be for the air intake solenoid or AIS and the active exhaust flapper - problem is, his bike doesn't have them and from what I could tell most US bikes didn't, possibly on CA models. Not sure what the other code was that came up as it hasn't reappeared.

I could understand somebody removing the active exhaust garbage, but he has the original air cleaner and there is no solenoid, only the plastic plug that the electrical plug sits in as standard.

So, should he be concerned? I know he should get a tuner, and suggested this would possibly even help make it run a bit cooler once set up correctly as well as minimising the popping from the exhaust.

Hearing and reading a bit about the HD screaming eagle tuners at the moment losing maps etc after software updates, even though HD tell you that nothing has changed, so should he steer away from the HD tuner, and look at possibly the Power Vision tuner, and if so which one?

    cheers

Cheers for the reply Hilly, as for codes - honestly no idea mate if codes were present before battery change but would presume they were (historical?), he never checked as the CEL wasn't on prior. I was thinking the same way as you re it be married to a tuner prior. We spoke to the dealer where he bought the bike and the young salesfellla initially said he would grab the vin # and check out the back in case they FORGOT to give him the tuner that would have been with the bike, but he quickly backpeddled when he saw the bike still had the original a/c housing.

Mate probably isn't going to modify the bike much as it goes well enough for the riding we do, would just like to minimise/stop popping, maybe play with cold start engine speed, hopefully disable the active exhaust and intake solenoid thingy, and hopefully get it to run a bit cooler - does the Dynojet PCv alow this sort of tinkering? He doesn't want to spend big money on a tuner and most likely doesn't require the functionality of something like the TTS system - but hey thats why I'm asking.

He may have to do as you have suggested and get the dealer to have a look if it has a different cal file flashed, but will still need some form of tuner to adjust anyway i presume?

Thanks again Hilly, mate are you saying if the original ECM has been flashed by an aftermarket tuner that you can't then use a different brand? If he does end up going back to HD workshop, are they able to tell if an aftermarket or even S/E tuner has been fitted before and would he then just have to buy the same brand and be good to go again?

    cheers

I agree with everything Hilly has told you

but I think you should be squeezing the HD sales fella a bit harder , he could save you a lot of grief

Thanks for the help here gents, will let my mate know his best course of action and that he should at the least, get the bike checked at the dealer on their diagnostic tool.

Been doing more googling aound on tuners, and am probably going to recommend the TTS to him, as another mate just purchased a brand spankers Heritage and is talking about slip ons or exhaust systems and a/c, and I noticed you can buy a  TTS module that can be used on 2 different bikes - so if they combine the dollars, they could get the tuner with more functionality for posible mods later on wink

2 more questions, and then i'll stop yes? is it easier/better/cheaper to by direct from Mastertune, or through the sole aussie distributor i could find?

Lastly, the advertised cable kits have what I think is a serial comms port connector for the laptop side - can you get a different lead to suit a USB or even HDMI if your laptop doesn't have the other port?

    thanks again

Its a mistake to buy a TTS with the dual license, particularly in the situation you mention
The VCI is locked to each of the bikes
Part company with one and you have a problem
If the Heritage Classic your mate has was linked to a TTS, you should get hold of it
It cannot be used to flash a tune to any other bike
If you have a VCI linked to a bike, it should be sold with the bike

If you're gonna buy TTS, m&m cycles in the states sell it as cheap as anyone when I bought mine

I have seen a plethora now of used "import" Harleys from the US that have air cleaner and pipe mods , and NO tuner with the bike !

Why ? Well in the US you always could get a "stage 1" download direct from the dealer Digitech to the ECM WITHOUT the need for your own SEPST dongle ( AKA the "Race tuner"<img data-cke-saved-src=";)

( This was never an option in Australia from your HD dealer )

Also for sure many "grey imports" have the married tuners lost somewheres on the journey , by fuck they manage to lose the spare keys /fobs/handbooks all the time !!

To Docgreen , yes you can get adapter cables from Belkin USB to serial adapter, F5U109.

They are the ones I use anyway , they came recommended to me years ago and have proved trouble free

With regard to the exhaust popping on the bike you mention , True Duals on any Softail ( any Harley really !) are prone to that

PS "Domestic US market" HD's never had the "Active air" and "Active exhaust" , but the wiring harness on many models have the connectors anyway ! ( Just unconnected )

Well guys, the DTC codes are all sorted - sort of :) Mate wasn't interested in talking to the dealership - bit of a tight arse at times! Anyway, he ended up ordering the connector plugs for the active exhaust and active intake solenoid that have a small resistor in them from O/S, these fool the ECU into thinking the 2 solenoids are doing their thing. The exhaust one worked a treat and the code stayed clear, the active intake drove another code - so I had a look when he popped over, and it was just shorted with a piece of wire in the back of the plug - cheap arseholes (2 different suppliers, and don't know where he got them but can find out if anyone needs them) anyway, we searched the recommended resistor rating and he ordered one and fitted and happy days, no codes.
Still haven't convinced him to get a tuner yet :(

    cheers
