Hi all, just got back from a short putt and noticed the very front cap screw of the primary cover was loose and when I went to nip it back up zero  bite . Should I do a helicoil or fill with JB weld and retap , any ideas are greatly appreciated  ? and thanks in advance.

This may not be your bikes primary... But is the stripped screw from item 18 or 19 ???   ( IE ,, primary cover or derby cover ?? )...   If it is your primary cover ,, is the stripped screw a long or short bolt ?? .. Some are long , and some are short as shown in pic, (item 4 and 5)  .....

Thanks Mark, where your diagram shows item 4 ,mine is the next hole forward  and is a short bolt  , approximately 25/30 mm long, also my motor is a shovelhead twin belt drive, thanks for your input.

Noddy ,, Good news it is the short bolt ... If it was the longer bolt, (I take it the Shovel has the long bolts in the primary cover),, , it would have been a pain in the arse to get a helicoil , or whatever down the longer hole ...

Mate, As these bolts are not high torque , I would use a helicoil, (spring coil type),, that fits the oem stock bolt .. The kit comes with a drill to suite, etc ...You may want to go to a workshop that you know, they may have them,, this will save you from buying the kit just for one bolt ... You could use a "time sert" insert , (solid type),, to suite the stock bolt .. these are a lot stronger, but they may be harder to find .. Whatever you use , put a dab of red locktie on the insert , and give 24 hours to cure before buttoning up ....
I would'nt use the JP weld , (or similar), in this application., as you want a straight hole,,, you will get this with the helicoil drilling in the original hole ....

You have another option ,, if the primary is not leaking and all other primary cover bolts are torqued correctly ,, leave it alone .. Plenty of bolts holding the primary cover as is .. Remember its a Shovel,, One less primary cover bolt is not going to stop her ..... Good luck .....

Thanks for the feedback guys, being a dry primary I will not mess with it unless it becomes an issue, never heard of the time sert , only used helicoil in the  past but will keep them in mind
