Electrical WEIRD(!) issue

My 1981 FLHC is behaving somewhat weird lately
Whenever the break is activated (foot as well as hand) the head & and tale light turns on along with a position light on my front fender that is hooked up to my head light
Initially I just had a giggle about it referring it to a 21th century safety "feature" - but the longer it takes before I understand what's causing this I get more and more annoyed with this feature - to make things worse, when I turn on the headlight (purposely) at night I don't have a break light at all - (or since the rear light shines really bright), the break light is on all the time!

The only electrical work I've done recently was to switch the hand brake sensor as well as replace/refitted the position lights after the position mount weld ceased for me - as such I had to remove the position lights and front indicators, BUT I can assure you that I connected the terminals back to where they belong afterword

Anyone that can provide a suggestion on what to look for (or even better) test what the hell is going on here???

    cheers

Had a similar problem with my chopper after changing to led taillights. When operated brake headlight would come on. Turned out to cheap led tailight had no separation of the two circuits.brake and tail got better leds problem fixed.dont know if that is your problem just something to check. ......

Could be a bad earth in the tail light or faulty stop tail globe. If you remove the stop light globe does the head light come on when you try the brake?

I'd be looking for a bad earth. The odd symptoms you describe are classic signs of a bad earth. The weld mount you refer to wasn't the earth attachment for the lights was it? Maybe the new mounting point is not as well earthed as the old one. The new one isn't rubber mounted by any chance? Or maybe painted where it attaches?Like the others have pointed to, that bad earth could also be in the bayonet fitting for the globe.

Bad earths are a common problem on older bikes.
Good luck. Let us know what you find.

The easiest reply to this is NO - but I found a lot of useful hints at the US shovelforum (http://www.shovelhead.us/forum/showthread.php?p=2430478&posted=1#post2430478)

I'll check back once I done some of the things suggested - tail light globe being at the top of my list :)

Ha! - sassed it out enlightened
Tail light was the culprit - BUT NOT the globe - It was the two connectors inside the housing that touched each other

A little bit of brute force pushing the connectors apart wink - in with the globe and everything works perfectly again - Yeaa!!! smiley

cheers & take it easy on the road - all these hand held devices is making a lot of drivers unable to keep their eyes on the road (and bikers)
