Well I done mine today.  Outer shoe was shot to shit along with the chain. 80,000Ks   Inner shoe was good but swapped it out anyway, along with new inner cam bearings.  So my bike has done 100,000 Km.  back one was the original and the outer was changed when I put cams in.  Worn then due to incorrect assembly at the factory.  After looking at the damage to the outer shoe I would say 50,000ks is around you should be looking at them and swapping them out.  I would also suggest Adjustable pushrods,  I didn't but it was a pain in the Arse to do but I am glad I did as one of the gaskets in the reather was not on correctly and as such was more than likely venting straight to in the inside of the rocker cover.

I had everything but a stupid 5/16 12 point 3/8 drive socket.  According to the manual it has allen head screws holding the cam plate in position.  Yep 8 but also 2 12 point 5/16 nuts also,  So down to Adelaide tools and 13 bucks later.  But jobs done.  Just got to put the exhaust back on and fill her full of oil and turn it over a few times without the plugs in to get some oil to the parts...  And then see what happens.

Good pics there AJ. I'm about to do mine soon. I've got 86,000 kays on mine now, it had 36,000 when I got it but I don't know if they had ever been changed or checked. Its started getting a few rattles and ticks so she'll be coming apart soon. It's got SE adjustable push rods so that should make it a tad quicker. What did it cost you in bits?

gooday aj,guessing those nuts might be "e tork",in some cases a 12 point socket will fit neat enough to get the job done, cheers

AJ56 ,,, Looks like either the primary or secondary tensioner can wear dramatically, as shown in our two examples, for no rime or reason,, you could say a bit of a crap shoot .... If they get down to the metal insert , pieces of tensioner are being chipped off a lot quicker ,, and the chain starts to get damaged as show in the pics ... All these chips of tensioners and metal shavings from the chain are running around, ending up going through the oil pump, and it starts to get scoring and could start playing up ....

It looks like 50 -60,000 is a good time to inspect the tensioners,, if everything looks ok button her back up ,,,,... At 80,000 or over , bite the bullet and buys all parts to refresh cam chest, and that part of the motor will be good for another 50,000 .....

Finished it off today, all good. However on another note. I have noticed that my front suspension bangs when it hits bumps. It has always annoyed me no end, so have a look behind the head light. Both Fork Pinch Bolts sheared so nothing was supporting the forks. Replaced both bolts and checked everything over and seems ok. So another thing to look at which is not really a serviceable item. it is a major operation to check these sort of things... So if your fronts really feels the bumps then check them out.

Old biker mate put me onto it years ago. Been running it since.

Also had a very smart fellow from here tell me the importance of zinc.

You be surprised at amount of people that run diesel oil though.

I don't know if one oils better then the next, I just think changing more often then recommended is of more importance.

Chriso,,, I have to agree with above comment,, at 75,000 those tensioners look in good shape .... But I've been told you only pussy your bike, so that could be the reason ..... ONLY JOKING ....

Wont be any Penrite 20w- 60 oil on the shelves now after this !!!!! How is the bike going after the upgrade and tune after the trip away ????

Hahaha, as you know that bike gets a caining... lol

Bike flys after Lushy had a play mate, better bike to ride, smooth power right through rev range and very well mannered.
Not going to be one that now runs the stage 4 down as I loved it, but no comparison to the 107 build.

    Not wrong Hilly .

Speaking of regular oil changes, I reckon that's how I got 74,000 hard ks  out of stage 4 and prob would have kept going too, anyone heard of more ks then that out of one?
Dunno what's expected but I got 2 mates that got a lot less.

Sorry to go of topic Mark

Not yet Chriso, but I will keep you posted.

I think you might be right about the regular oil change thing.

Hi all , I have a 2002 FXDX with 72000 klms , been checking out options like the gear drive opposed to the SE 25284-11 cam plate upgrade w/ oil pump and hyd tensioners , local Harley dealer quoted $1000 for just replacing the tensioners , $1300 for the upgrade to 2007 style hyd tensioners (apparently lasts 300 000 klms ) , and also advised against gear drive , stating not genuine Harley and wont last due to being inferior products .... so it looks like there is many variations in how long they can last , some std shoes last 20 000 , others 100 000 klms , almost makes me go back to an 1340 EVO ....

My original tensioners were replaced at 80,000kms. Myself, I wouldn't go past this number after seeing mine.                08 FLHT.

Did a little Google search when someone mentioned Slick50. It was all the rage when I was a lad and into cars but I couldn't remember seeing anything about it in the last couple of years.

Interesting read but not the only article for or against the product. http://skepdic.com/slick50.html

Drac,, Did you remove the 2 x bolts that hold the outer tensioner in place to get a good look at the wear away from the chain ?? .. If so,, another look /replace, at say 85,000km would be a good idea,, as this seems to be the magic figure they can start to go down hill a lot quicker, with whatever oil is used , or how the bike is ridden .... Now if you do check the outer again at say 85,000km and the outer still shows almost no signs of wear,, (which on evidence the inner should still be in reasonable condition),, come back here, (with some pics) ,, and I might just change to Penrite 20w60 with the magic 10 tenths racing oil ..... Cheers ......
