hi guys, JC from Sydney, been riding a couple of years on my vstar custom bobber that I built. Always loved Harleys especially heritage/deluxe softails.

Currently searching used sites for a heritage or deluxe to start my next project.  Just really really confused with the used bike market prices on these models........ I quite often see stock bikes 10 years apart in age and the Older higher km bike is more expensive than the newer one .?!?!   Are there engine sizes I should avoid ?..

E.g often see mid 90's more expensive than say early to mid 00's.

Realistically I'm in the market for a bike under $14k  what year k's etc should I realistically expect to be a solid purchase ????

    Thanks JC

Look for a late 90's EVO with low ks if possible.
About the only thing that goes wrong with them is the Base Gaskets. As a rule, just warm up the bike before you head off and it will be fine.

Should be able to get an 07 onwards twin cam for about that money. Some of the prices that people are asking for is foolish but those are the bikes advertised but not selling.

So what's more reliable twin cam or evo ??? Or am I opening a real can of worms with that question ?

You will get a twin cam for that money. I would take a twin cam over a rattlely old evo any day

    Hi wimbo,

Looking to do a Cali style (cholo or whatever you want to call it) heritage or deluxe as my next project.

I did a bobber style Yamaha vstar that I really enjoyed. I'm pretty good at most of the work except motors and gearboxes etc. so really searching for advice on reliability on that side of things.

Early Twincams were noted to fail,(look on Google), EVO's when looked after just go and go.
Moot point on here though, cause as far as I know the majority of owners have Twincams.

Wimbo that's because they are a far more superior, reliable bike bud.
Flip top nokias were a good phone.... In there day but much better phones available now.

Don't get me wrong the evos are a good bike but i know what I'd prefere if I had the choice.

chriso, you wouldnt have one if it wasn't for the EVO, you would be riding a Boulevard.
Superior is in the Eye of the Beholder bro. Like the Brough Superior. The latest twinkies might be Superior, but if I was offered one or the other, I'd go the Brough and sell it and pay my Mortgage off and but a nice home on the far North Coast of NSW and one in Queenstown on South Island.

Early rattly old Evo owner here, have had a 75 FXE Shovel, Iron Head Sporty chop, Twin Cam Wideglide, 2005 VROD and currently a 1988 FXSTC. I didn't connect with the Twinkie, guess I like em old and simple, like myself. The early Evos were really Shovels with an Evo head and barrels, they even had the clunky Four speed box and kicker, mine has the five speed box and no kicker, I love it, it's got soul

My opinion on the matter, a twin cam is a much nicer bike to ride. more power way less vibration. However the Evo has more soul. You can feel it when you ride, it buzzes, it's slow when stock but it's simple.

Depends what you're planning on doing, where and when you'll ride. My old Fatboy wasn't pleasant at 120. My 96ci twincam was, my 103ho is happy to 140+

What do you want from the bike?

Personally i'd love another Evo along side my Street Glide.

Success !!!! Got myself an 05' heritage !

I spent a lot of time looking at late 90's evos but the money people want just made no sense to me!! In the end I ended up with a 2 tone stock 05' only mods were screaming eagle mufflers and air cleaner.,
One owner from new, full service history, low kms and in budget.

    One happy camper !!
