Changing to synthetic oil

Im not after opinions re the best oil as it has been done to death on the forum.

Im just wondering if there are any issues with changing to synthetic engine oil like Amsoil 20w 50 after the bike has been running on normal HD engine oil.  Am thinking of changing the 07 fatboy over to it prior to a long ride soon.  The bike has done about 16000 Ks. I recall years ago putting synthtic oil in a mildly worked 253 in the Kingswood and it was a disaster.  Mind you that was 20 years ago.  Spat it out all over the ground via the oil filter seal!!

From what I read its good for engine temperature as well as wear so thought I might give it a go ? After opinions from the learned ones.

    Thanks.

Comes standard in the CVO 110, I also run the Mobil 1 in my 103 Fatboy.

Binnsy, I ran Amsoil in my Fatboy and loved the stuff, and you did see what engine mods I had done to it. Might be a little more expensive than others, but I swear by it. I used the standard stuff before, so changing over caused no issues.

Thanks everyone and thanks Odin that's what I was worried about, changing from normal oil to synthetic without any issues. Will treat myself and stick some in I think. Thanks again.

I use the Mobil V twin full Synthetic, 10 times better than the semi synthetic HD 360 oil.

Ahh... I love all talk about oil! You could just about run extra virgin olive oil in these motors, and they wont give a toss!! As long as it's lubed, it will work.

The only thing I do is run the good shit in my gearbox to try and reduce the ever favourite CLUNK!

I don't waste my coin on hugely expensive oil. I change it regularly enough and would do so even with the expensive shit.

    Just my 0.2

Binnsy, for got to tell ya ( some may agree or disagree ) on this one. If you do change I would say do a Scavenge change so you dont mix the 2 oils. Just my opinion, but Im also a fussy cunt

Spot on mongrel, Castrol GTX 20W-50 the way to go, or Shell Helix 3 20W-50, vary it if in Extreme temp conditions of hot or cold

You can mix all the oils (synthetic or mineral), top up with either etc

Watched a video on oils the other day (yes, I'm into S&M). They were showing old mineral oil, which looked like dirty water (fucked, protecting nothing), vs old synthetic - which started to look like mineral oil but seemed to keep most of it's viscosity.

Even they said as long as you change regularly you don't need to spend the big bucks, but if you're lazy then synthetic is the only way to go.

Went to HD yesterday and all three holes will be going synthetic. Made up my mind finally.

Poor decision after the advice you got

You want engine oil for the engine , primary oil for the primary and transmission oil for the transmission

might as well piss in all three holes as put the HD oil in

Thanks beaglebasher, what you say makes a lot of sense. I am changing the oil due to a long ride coming up, but just thought I would ask opinions on synthetic stuff. Thought I may as well change it over during this service and see how it goes. And yes the oil stays fairly clean in the engine between changes. Cheers.
