Passing Lamps

This probably has been covered somewhere on here but I cannot find it

as with heritages softail classics... mine has the passing lamps fitted (and working fine)

my question relates to the bypass switch (toggle) that enables you to manually override them so they do not come on.

The location on my bike I am assuming is not the original position as it is placed on the back side of the chrome at the top of the forks

ie: in front of the tank..... I cannot imagine this is the right place as it is not exactly convenient whilst riding to reach for it

can someone please confirm where the switch should be found?

On my BIL's Heritage, the switch was on the left hand side (looking forward) mounted into the back of the chrome cowling fork covers. When he bought it over from WA the SA guys wouldnt pass it while there was an option to switch the lights on and off separately (amongst other things). We just bypassed the switch and pushed it inside the cowling, covering the hole with a small piece of heavy duty black tape. Got through no probs.

    hmmm.. thx

basically the same as mine but mine is on the right looking from the seat forward

maybe that is the original location...

just seems a strange place considering if you are riding and need to switch it off

you would think it would have been mounted on the main light switch as with the newer models

as for the police not passing it...

thats ridiculous.... the law says you must be able to disengage it even when the headlight is on...

I dont know about that. Wasn't my bike. I knew that whatever we had to do was make sure they only turned on on high beam and not low.

    I may stand corrected

    oh ok

    that maybe the misunderstanding....

as with any driving lights usually fitted to the high beam,

they must turn off when you switch to low beam and also must have an isolating switch to turn them off no matter which beam you are using.

with these particular bikes... they are not actually supposed to engage in high beam at all...

the heritages passing lamps are actually wired to come on at low beam only

and again do have an over-ride switch to stop them coming on at all

the idea of these lights are not as spot lights,

their function is to light up the side of the road (shoulder) and the centre line to aid in seeing whilst riding with low beam

and at the same time not blinding oncoming vehicles.
