Hi guys, I am doing a ride through Victoria with a few work mates in late September. Most of us are experienced riders bar 1. He will be on his L plate so a question has come up about this. Being an L plater, does he have to wear a fluro vest whilst riding in Victoria? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Wazza.

This ABC article about cross border licence condition differences says that whatever applies in your home state applies when you travel.

    http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2014/03/26/3972005.htm

That doesn't mean that some local copper won't know about the rule change in 2013 and hassle you...

Who cares about the rules? If you got ya L plates you got ya L plates. Just like a license.

The main thing is if you go to Melbourne there are some pretty strange rules about turning right from the left hand lane when it is 2 lanes in each direction.

Well it was last time I was there anyway.

I'd check too. I was always told you obey the rule of the State you're in.

In "theory" he should wear a flouro vest....BUT my son has his 'L's and only wears the vest at night for safety. During the day he stores it somewhere on the bike. He did get pulled over once and they asked about the jacket and he feigned that it was only nights when you wear it...lol....he got away with it in the end because he was polite to the cop (his words not mine). If you do get pulled over and your not acting/riding like a F%^K-wit then 99% of the time they will just warn you. Well thats been my experience.

Thanks everyone. He is going to wear a vest whilst in Vic to keep the heat of him. The trip will be during school holidays so there will be plenty of revenue raisers around.

Yep, wear the vest. Vic cops are traffic nazis. But don't worry about the "hook turns" in Melbourne CBD. There is an easy method for handling them: just pull to the left, and wait for some native Melbournian to beep their horn at you in frustration, and then go right. I've been here 3 years and can't make sense of them otherwise.

yeah, pretty much wait for the green.

Drivers here expect it so you will not get honked at for doing a legit hook turn. Its way too risky to try to turn while your direction is still green as the cars tend to not slow down when passing you on the right. PLUS...ALWAYS look to the right (ie the direction you came from) when doing a hook turn as the shear number of muppets down here that run Amber and Red lights is just amazing.
