    Hey fellas

Just curious what fluid you guys recommend for the primary case

I am seeing many answers from plain motor oil to ATF and arguments for and against synthetics

I have just removed the Primary case to install a new stator and want to go with the best

but I have no idea which is the best

For me it's 30w engine oil mineral have tried auto oil type f but found the primary to have a bit
More noise so went with 30w after looking at us forum And that was several years back
If I am feeling rich and have it belray primary But that's been along time since I used it

    Thanks perthhog

I am seeing a few people are going with 30w when googling it.

This is my first oil change for the primary so I really have no idea

and the user manual I have seems to neglect mentioning what to use

only mentions how much  to use   lol

hey red101au, so ya took the plunge, do you have clutch puller? you may also need a new main shaft clutch key, good idea to give stater motor a clean up an stick a,new set of brushes in, makes a big difference to an 80s evo.you can get brushes set for $12 set local auto auto elec.

    Hey bob

hadnt really thought that far ahead

from the videos I have looked at on the procedure

it looks like I can just release the tension on the chain and remove the rotor and stator without having to disturb the clutch pack at all.

but I guess with this weather we are having I will not be riding for a little while

so I may go whole hog....

    preventative maintenance and all that

I decided to get a little creative seeing I had the case off...

quite happy with the result considering it was the shitty grey alloy before

I'm running a 10 W 60 full synthetic, and, after hearing of so many stator failures due to over heating, run an extra bit to bring level up to bottom of cover.

    No adverse effects, runs good.

hey Red, you will need to remove clutch, inner primary, starter motor to replace stator, rotor on 88 evo, gear box has tapered mainshaft with a key lock and needs a puller to dislodge, yep best time to do it now as Murphy's Law asually will fuck you up at some prime time ride.

Well finally got around to ripping out the stator and replacing it....

Pretty straight forward really and luckily I did not have to disturb the starter motor and cluch cluster

Once I finally got the bolt off holding the rotor sprokets it was all go....

funny thing that, the rotor sprocket bolt was damn tight.... I eventually had to go and buy a rattle gun and 1 1/2" socket

there was no way I was going to budge it with the breaker bar.... I was trying for ages

even with the rattle gun it took ages for it to finally budge enough to undo.

once I had the bolt out the rest was easy

slackened off and removed the chain tensioner

then just slipped the sprockets off and removed the the rotor

as for the rotor.... I did not have the proper puller thingy so I made use of a couple of allan keys slipped into the holes either side and gently tugged and off it came.

from there I simply removed the 4 screws securing the stator and the little plastic brace holding the plug and tapped the plug back inside the case and it was done.

getting the plug back in on the new stator was a little bit tricky.... but with a little oil smeared over it and some gentle pursuasion it was finally seated right... placed the plastic locking clamp back and replaced the 4 screws into the stator and reassembled it all

the next job was removing the regulator/rectifier .....

    pretty straight forward too

hardest part was reaching in between the guard and the oil tin to get to the do hicky solenoid thingy where the wire lead to.....

after about 5 mins of playing with it, I realized it just pulls out of the holding clamp and can be dragged out the side with just enough length to undo the existing wire and replace it with the new....

so there we have it.... My first ever attemp to fix anything on a Harley (pretty impressed with myself lol)

thanks to all for the advice and suggestions

well done Red, sounds like you may have a later model gear box in that 88 softail, I wish it was that easy when I did my 87 softail. Harleys sure aint rocket science,i bet you will now be lookin at the next job to tackle.

    thanks Bob

I was actually glad that it all came off without having to remove everything else

as it is my first, I really didnt want to tackle a total strip down just yet

plus I dont have a shed to work in, just a car port out back lol

and yes I am looking forward to doing more to it as it is required...

although I dont imagine I will need to do much for awhile

the motor had a complete rebuild about 650kms ago

including pistons and I am told it is 10 thou over

they really are a simple straight forward design.... love it

I have worked on many bikes and cars in the past and some of the jappers really frustrate the shit out of you

I believe mine is the change over it is actually an 89 with 88 compliance

so I am guessing it was made late in 88 to be released in 89....

so I may have lucked out with it

there was no tapered spline on the rotor, just a simple slide on/off

there was still tension on the chain but by sliding the inner sheath back I was able to lift the sprockets off the end

and then just slide everything else off

I wish I had thought to take step by step pics or video.... next time   lol

great work Red first up job, sometimes things just "fall" into place. It's the bloody inner primary cover that makes things difficult with early evos. You may get the custom bug now then if mech all ok.

    I dont think so....

all the parts I am selling off atm were to customize it

but I have decided to keep her Classic

I even put the old windscreen back on  lol

I did replace the seat with the LePera and it was quite comfy

but then again decided to put the old saddle back on her....

Classic all the way for me :)
