Nirvana - asking for a kiss?? . This forum requires no attitude to be displayed - please keep this need of kissing where it belongs eh

Spook - sorry to hear that the helmet contributed to his passing . It Regretably demonstrates my point precisely . You cannot stop riding but you can minimize the risks associated with it . That's a fact but some here most likely won't accept that aspect

You sound like you need a little love in yer life mate and I don't mean toss factors. Unfortunately it was an empty offer as my gal would beat you senseless enduros gear or none.

To everyone who's lost friends on the roads like Spooks and cattleprod I offer you all my sincerest condolences - may your brothers rest in peace!

Unfortunately it is the danger factor that gives us the feeling of freedom and fun when we do these things, it is so in my two great passions in life climbing and riding. Both pursuits have cost me friends but we know that it's a calculated risk and that risk assessment comes into play in both cases. If you get enough out of what you're putting on the line then it's worth the risks otherwise we all end up dying of something eventually anyway but missing what life had up for grabs. How far and what you wanna put on the line is up to each of us IMHO.

    https://youtu.be/yRoFQUdUL7E

You really have to be in the game to know why we take these risks. Makes every second we're here all the richer.

As for you Kato (side kick of the green hornet) what I believe you're missing here is the underlying issue of what people have raised, the right for us to make our own choices and not have them thrust upon us by people with their own agenda or view thus taking away our basic right to be responsible for ourselves.

I've had V&H big radius exhaust and was defected on the ride home after buying the bike. I kept and used the exhaust after clearing the road worthy process but always knew it had the potential to attract the wrong kind of attention due to how loud it was and how obvious it was that it was an aftermarket and non-road worthy exhaust. I was therefore selective on where and when I chose to make a heap of noise with it, and not in my street or in a built up area etc. If I had of got caught again, I would have accepted the penalty and paid any fines etc without argument as I knew it would happen again eventually, until I sold it.

I also own one of those cannonball helmets and used to wear it for around town riding. I haven't worn it for a while but never wore it for long rides. With or without the AS sticker stuck on the back, the cannonball helmets are visually very obvious to not have any of the foam stuff inside that makes a helmet bulky, but serves the purpose of absorbing any impact before your skull has to. They are therefore very obviously illegal to anyone that knows about motorcycling and this includes the coppers. Unlike other revenue raising fines that often aren't much about road safety, those helmets are a road safety issue whether people like it or not, and even if its only impacting the safety of the wearer. I always expected the possibility about being caught and fined when I wore mine but wouldn't or couldn't have argued against it.

There will always be arguments about laws v freedom of choice when it concerns only the helmet wearer's safety and if they want to expose themselves to risk or not, it should be their choice etc. I agree with this 100% however if you're doing something that you know is wrong and it's really bloody obvious, I don't understand how you can get too upset about it.

Every first-world, developed country in the world has laws that we don't all like that are intended to protect people, even from themselves. Our governments spend a fortune on road safety and public health care so a really obvious, unsafe helmet is gonna attract the wrong kind of attention eventually, and it's gonna result in fines too. The freedom of choice we all often talk about is available in other parts of the world, but I suspect most of us wouldn't want to live in those places.

    My two cents worth...

All we need now is for the original poster (VanDutch) to say that his helmet had the correct compliance label on the outside and sewn into the inner lining and that he bought it in the belief it was fully compliant.

Moto GP riders would have the most state of the art helmets but it did not help poor young Marco Simoncelli. Have heard of other road accidents where riders helmeted heads detach from their bodies. No amount of compliance is gunner help you then. Not meaning to stick up for the illegal ones, only free choice.

sorry guys been away..  Thanks for all your input.  The helmet had a sticker on the outside. I wasn't aware it needed and inside sewn piece as well. I assumed the helmet was complying as I bought it from a motorcycle shop. Never had an issue anytime previously pulled over.

Not sure VD is a nice nickname though.

Makes me think of Jack Nicholsons helmet in the film "Easy Rider" The way this thread has gone....pretty funny really. Even the drug snorting bank robbers would get a chuckle out of it.

OOPS, DUGE just beat me to it.

This thread got me reminiscing , I remember years ago i was about 13 , so it was a lot of years ago ,, 70's helmits were compulsory , but you were ok to ride below 20 klm p hour without one if i remember correctly

Any way the beach at christies beach pt noarlunga , in southern adelaide was where we went straight after school , we used to sit in the same spot and wait every night for this woman to ride past , REEEEEL SLOW ,, she had long black hair , she used to wear a bikini , and was drop dead fucking gorgeous ,, every night in summer the cow would ride her honda 750 /4 , and smile has all us 12 -14 year olds stood goggle eyed , trying to get a better glimse of her big tits , in the bikini , before we all run home to pull one out

This thread just got me thinking about it ,, wife just asked what you smiling about , and said get that look out of your eye . , she also said have you turned into a perv or what , , did'nt appreciate me asking her to go to the garage strip of and sit on my bike .. .... Ohh well back to my daydreams .

    Hi
I've got four helmets, And most of the time I wear the "Shorty" one. I like the weight, the better hearing, and the slightly better peripheral vision. I was wearing one of the Harley brand ones when I wrecked my Road king after hitting a massive oil spill. Wrecked the helmet too. Saved my head. And perhaps my life.
On the other hand, Back in the day a friend that I grew up with ran off the road on his Superglige, had one of those Bell full face helmets on, broke his neck, not a scratch on him or the helmet, I guess some times, its just a mater of luck.
I should have been dead several times, blood every where, even had a priest give me the last rites on the ER table,,, , some times just luck,,,, ,
    or lack of it,,,,,

    Hi again
The last time I road with out a helmet was in 1986, I picked my brother up in Cronulla, gave him my helmet, and rode to Coffs Harbour, got pulled up a few of times, showed my "helmet exemption", and on our way, no lectures, looking over the bike etc.
The feeling of "Freedom", and just the totally different experience can not be described in words, it has to be lived, I did not do it to look cool, it was akin to sky diving, rushing towards the ground, wind pulling at your cheeks,,,,,,,,,,, you had to be there, in the moment,,,,,

Ha ha ha that's fucking hilarious!! Nice 1 Steelo!! I'd wanna better chin strap on that brain bucket though.

I remember when I was doing my apprenticeship as a Brickie and we'd have the back on the tray/tub of the F100 packed with half the crew going from job to job and then cracking a beer on the way home while we got driven around getting the boss to drop us off in different spots on the way home. Those were awesome good ol days getting tanned up in the hot sun with the summer breeze (and beers) cooling us off after a day of throwing bricks up 2 lifts of scaffolding and all the rest of it - the bosses two mottos were " Safety, think it, talk it, FUCK I T" and "we don't have work care we've got who cares".

The cops on a few occasions saw us as it was a pretty common site on the roads not all that long ago and we just gave em a nod and they were fine about it. There's no way you'd get away with that these days. But funnily enough with the stupid shit we did on the job when we were young no one ever got badly hurt and we resorted to some dodgey shit at times to get the job done.

Fast forward.... I've run my own buisness for the past seven years and was a stickler for health and safety and while carrying bricks one day slipped on muddy ground and seriously blew out a disk and 2 spinal operations later I'm still recovering and feeling the ouchies through handful of painkillers. I found that when you put too much safety in place you tend to become lax and less aware of your surroundings as you expect things to be a certain way and instead of using common sense on the fly to stay safe n sound you get hurt when that saftey feature/practice isn't there. Like parents that won't let their kid climb a tree in case they break their arm - if ya break ya arm once you'll think about it the next tree you take off up.

I might buy shares in a cotton wool company the way things are going in this state.

Ok so here's two helmets one is DOT approved and the second isn't. To my mind there isn't that much difference in the two. I mean there isn't that much that you can pack in to the approved I over the non approved that'd do all that much IMHO.

And I've added a page that is where one can get DOT decals (not the shiny ones but the yank style ones) for research purposes only ?? . I'm sure that $9 for four stickers would save some fines form cops that would look at your imported helmet with the official US. Decal and scratch their heads and let you on your way if you put one on your novelty helmets. But I'm sure that no one would do that seeing as it's against the law (isn't it?) or at least decoration.

    And the approved version

Just for information purposes now people!!!!!

This is the crap all the fuss is about.

If you wanna spend less than the novelty lids and want the above sticker then these are two links I came across while buggering about on eBay.

The first is 5 tick and the second is DOT but claims to be Aussie approved  as far as international certifications go there's nothing stricter than the CE rating as that is the pinnacle of quality world wide.

Seem to remember a similar argument coming up a few months ago. Someone even went as far to say; your an idiot if you dont wear gloves. LOL What a joke. What happened to Freedom of Choice. It's what the democratic premise was built on and we live in a supposed democracy. Way too Too many rules but. I resent anyone telling me what to wear including the Government and their helmet laws. Cant beat them so I comply. I rode many years without a helmet when living in the US and the law allowed me. I wear leathers when it is cold not because of fear. And yes I ride occasionally in just a tee shirt if it is hot. My Choice. I understand the consequences. What gives anyone the right to be judgemental of others who are just going about doing their own thing. I respect anyones right to ride around in their undies if they want. It should be their right. It doesn't affect or concern, me so why should it be any of my business. I respect Kato's right to have an opinion but I dont however, give him or anyone else the right to tell me what I should wear or how I should ride. Frankly; it's noone's business but mine.

In any prang involving injury or death, the relative contribution of the skullcap versus a full face helmet or even a bare head to said death is many times less a factor than the rider's choice of a motorcycle instead of a car, or even taking the bus. Or staying home. But not during natural disasters. You know what I mean.

Fuck safety nazis. Fuck ATGATT. Wear whatever the fuck floats your boat. If you want to dress in a fluorescent sumo suit with flashing LEDs, go right ahead. If you want to ride to Melbourne in your jocks, best of Irish luck to you. Start moralising or putting down others for their choice, well, fuck you.
