    Hi All,

New to the forum and it seems customary to introduce myself. Living in NW suburbs of Sydney and was offered a '96 XL1200S at a price I couldn't say no to!

She's been in storage for a couple of years so needs a bit of a tidy up and service but I'm happy to get my hands dirty, so I'll probably be asking for advice and tips in the near future. Looking forward to being a part of the forum.

I'll throw up a pic soon.

    Cheers!

What type o price you pick it up for? Been scoping out sporties of a similar vintage and model as 2nd bike.

Is that the one with 4 plugger heads?

Cheers for the the welcome Krackers, nice avatar, is that a Street Glide?

John, the short version is that I picked it from a mate who is currently living internationally and was back in Sydney for a week. He was going to post it on bikesales for $4900 with 45,000km on the odometer as a quick sale, knew I was keen on them so offered it to me for $4k. I've wanted a HD for a long time but had no real plans on buying one until he threw it out there.

It runs, no major issues just some rust spotting from sitting for so long and running slightly lean. I've dropped the oils and filter, will clean the carb and sort out idle etc. this weekend then slowly start bringing the chrome back to life. I'm not real keen on the bars and seat but can live with them for the moment until I stumble across something better.

It has the single plug heads, from what I've read they didn't adopt the duals until '98. It's got the twin discs up front and adjustable suspension all round and I think they may have upped the compression a point or so for the '96/'97 S but I may be wrong.

Thanks for the welcome guys, here's that pic I was talking about.

The tank has been swapped out for a wide tank (possibly from a custom model), fwd controls and some Willie G bling added as well as the sissy bar. After mucking around with it a bit, I'm not sure if it still has the stock AC and slip ons. The filter body is K&N, do they usually come HD branded? The mufflers are stamped "Harley Davidson", but there is a warning about them being intended for closed circuit use only and not being EPA compliant. Does that sound normal?

I want to delete the sissy bar and saddle bag mounts but it looks longer bolts and spacers have been used, will I need to chase up some stock bolts before I rip them off?

    Cheers.

Welcome mate. Get rid of that great big air filter and change the Indicators for something more discreet.
The mufflers look standard. If the bike sounds like a postie bike then it should be EPA compliant. Testing from memory is max 94dba at half a metre. If a copper checks it though, he'll put the db meter right up to the pipes and tell you to rev the shit out of it.
    Otherwise, nice buy mate.
