    Dear Friends.

This may seem a strange enquiry

I have a 2003 injected Deuce with S&S slash cut mufflers.

Might be the helmet (RJays flip front) but even with earplugs, they make a tremendouse noise on the open road.

I'm thinking of replacing them for a trial with a set of almost brand new originals bullet shaped mufflers.

Will I be able to hear myself think with the new mufflers?

Is there anything else I'll need to do?

Or is there something I can do to further quieten down the S&S pipes. They appear to have mufflers inside.

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Regards

first of all steelo ol'son the ballistic shaped stockers are going to sound like a sewing machine, secondly get yaself a high vis vest or similar cause some cunt will surely run you over seeing as though they wont hear ya comin', maybe take the mufflers out of your slip ons and put some wool muffler packing around them OR invest in some SE "dual shorty" street performance slip ons, very middle of the range sounding type of muffler which would be perfect for what I think your chasing
good luck mate and watch out for those hopeless cunts out there in cars
    cheers

If you can get a set of the US Spec Harley standard mufflers you will be happy.

They are louder than standard but not excessive and will pass EPA test.

I have the S&S tapered slipons that look like the standard muffler and although louder than the US Spec which my bike came with (import) they are not excessive. When cruising along they are pretty quiet. I think the S&S slash cut style is a louder muffler compared to their tapered one which is more of a deep rumble
might be worth slipping out the internal baffle and wrapping with glass matting?
My riding buddy has V&H Short shots and they crack like lightning & I can barely hear mine when he is next to me....

Mate rides a Fat Bob with Vance pipes, I can hear him long before I see him, Its the sound he likes. On my Slim I have screaming Eagle slip on mufflers which is what I like. Not to noisy at all BUT traffic around me know I'm there and I like the exhaust tone vs Stock mufflers where almost no one can hear you and you're left with a note/sound that doesn't do justice to these V Twins. But again its all about what you like.

You know Tim's Street is pretty quiet considering,

So is my Ultra. Either would be a good choice.

Khrome Werks tapered mufflers will give you the level of noise you're after

At 2003 , same ones as a Fatboy FLSTF. easy to find for a 2003 Deuce on their website. Rollies in Qld were the Aussie distributors for a while , maybe still are

I did 'Harley tours" for 17 years here in Perth WA , with yearly pits inspections as it was a " hire or reward vehicle"

The Khrome Werks look 100% stock OEM , and have no logos embossed into them to catch attention ! They "passed the pits" no worries every year , but were still pleasantly "loud"

It's done. Old stockies fitted. Went for quick ride. Can't believe the difference. No droning in my ears. Have a better trial tomorrow on the mystery run. Thanks for advice. Still toying with another brand of aftermarket pipe. Tim woud rather I got a tourer rather than spend too much more on the deuce. If anyone needs some sewing?

When I first brought mine it had the bog stock mufflers on, nice and quiet. In traffic it was like Russian Roulette, the clowns don't see you as it is, but if they don't hear you it is infinitely worse. When they hear you at least half or more of them look for you before trying to occupy your space. I started with SE slip ons and that made a world of difference and now I have radius 2 into 2. The old saying loud pipes save lives is very very true. I would never go back to a sewing machine again.
