    Hi

I'm new to Harley's, so I'm after a hit of advice on engine life. How many k's can you put on an engine before it will need a recon. I'm looking at buying a 2007 wide glide which has 45,000ks which seems a little high to me? Is this too many or is it just run in? Anything else I should be looking at?

    Thanks in advance.

45 is bugger all, bike will be fine. I know blokes that have 150. I bought softy with 60 on it.

In saying that there is a lot of second hand bikes out there with a lot lower Ks. Buyers are naming there price at the moment

I had a 2005 Anniversary Fatboy, did the regular services and on sold it with 184 000klm plus with full compression and running very well. Your looking for service history from a shop, what upgrades have been done, upgrade the timing belt at some point and when you do, do you want to do the cam as well. I rode my bike pretty hard but always made sure she was looked after.

45k kms isnt much if bike has been looked after but lots of lower mileage bikes been for sale for a long time. 100k kms should be no problem - yanks expect 100k miles out of theirs

I meant to add, 2007 onward twin cams are the ones to look for as you are with that wide glide. Improved cam design, bigger engine, six speed gearbox etc

At that mileage the engine is pretty much just broken in. Worse case you might need to hone the jugs and put in new rings but that would only be if the compression was low. Check the compression and leakage if you can as they will give you a general feel for how the internals are holding up.

My 06 Lowrider had 130,000 klm's on it when I put in a 103 Cube with 3800 klm's on it.

As far as the Mrs was concerned 130,000 klm's the motor was clagged so I HAD to get the 103.
Truth is it was running fine and I jumped on the new motor because it was cheaper horsepower than a rebuild with goodies.

Now looking for something to put a very strong 88 Cube in. lol

45,000 is not a lot at all. (IMHO)

45k, the guys run it in for you mate. If he hasnt thrown it off a cliff or gone thru 10 pair of tyres, should be sweet.
