New Battery - Nothing when Ignition turned on

    Hi Guys

I'm a newbie having just crossed into the dark (enlightened) side with my first HD - a 2009 XL1200N which has 6,000k and one lady owner delivered to Sydney from Queensland.

Travel alarm setting disengages when key is turned to ignition according  to the manual and I got a clicking from the starter when I pushed the Run/Starter button - low battery I guess. Rang her and it is probably the original that she used to keep trickle charged or it went flat she said! Bought new battery (Yuasa with right HD number), charged it up, found you need to turn key to ignition when disconnecting old battery, replaced with new, closed the cover and tried to start her. Absolutely nothing! No lights on dash or anything.

What have I missed? I popped into the local bike shop who had a couple of sportsters in the workshop. Their view was there are various ciruit breakers etc. you need to reset according to the model. I've seen advice on this site about red or yellow fuses etc..

Anybody had a similar experience and please, what is the secret I'm missing??

when removing the battery you need to have the key turned to accessories then pull out the main fuze .

take out the battery , put in new battery.

put in the fuse and start the bike .

i take it you didnt pull out the fuse , prob the problem .

Also make sure you got the right battery size

left side cover there is a huge ass 40A fuse. Pull it and see if it's intact.

sadly I don't think it's a supercheap auto trip for one of those fuses, probably a HD special for god know's how much $$$.

I had a similar problem after replacing my battery. Turned out that the negative terminal can work loose when reseating the battery. Just check that the wires are firmly connected to the terminals, and by all means check the fuse as well.

    Thanks Guys.
I think I had the main fuse and the grey cylindrical thing underneath it pulled out and the strap bolt removed before I tried to disconnect the battery terminals. Manual for the 2009 says to have the key on Ignition which it was. I'll check the negative terminal again first as it needs spacers to allow the HD cables to mount flush against the side (it is the right number but a little larger than the original HD battery and terminals are inset 3mm). Hopefully its that simple.

Problem solved!! Tzukius was closest. The real problem was the nut on the spanner - duh! I found a stray third red lead when I opened the side cover - the one leading from the main fuse, so everyone that mentioned main fuse also wins a prize. After connecting it to the positive terminal, the indicators did a flash. I turned the key and it started first time.

Thank you for your support. V

I've had a similarish problem with my 2014 xl883n, the battery ran down while the shitty weather kept me off the bike and I don't have a charger per say so I hooked up the trickle charger to give it enough power to kick over. When I tried it the first time I was a bit eager and I just got a ticking of the starter not having enough juice. So after a day on trickle I went out to have another crack at starting her up and nothing. Then I noticed that the display was asking for the pin. WTF? Anyone know why it's done that? I'm yet to try and punch the code in but am perplexed as to y it's asking for the code in the first place???

Still don't know why the pin issue came up but I left the battery on trickle for two days and she fired up. So apparently it IS possible to "charge" a totally flat battery with a maintainable only trickle unit. Go figure
