Brake upgrade options?

    G'day mates,

Looking for some advice around brake upgrades. I've done some reading and there seems to be a few options, some better bang for buck than others, and I'm interested to see what others have done/think.

The reason I ask is I'm upgrading my 883 to 1200 soon and wouldn't mind getting some better stopping power at the front as I will be getting more power than a stock 1200 and i'm unsure if the current 883 set-up is enough?

Some options I've seen include modifying to suit the XR dual calipers, but I hear negativity around introducing unsprung weight to the front. Another option I've come across is changing out the dual piston for a 4 piston caliper.

Have you guys done anything in this area?

Funny you mention that, I am going down the same path. With spoke wheels I can only for the Brembos as the XR callipers won't fit.

I have just ordered a set of EBC Double H pads to see if they do an okay job (FA381HH) before I look at other options.

I run a 1200 u/g on my Iron with the stock brakes and never had any issues. What year is your Sporty? Does it have ABS?

Put an EBC rotor, XR caliper (comes with pads) and a Hel braided line on my nightster(fitted with Iron wheels), great! May look at twin discs when the 88inch kit goes in, but great for the 1200. Good luck Noctm.

    Hi noctm,

    Price for brake upgrade was

EBC floating wave rotor - $200 (I think)
    XR1200 caliper - $250
HEL braided line - $100 (just under)

Brake and line delivered, caliper picked up from S-W Harley in Bunbury, very, very pleased. Brakes work awesome and after being asked by a few people about whine from the waves, NO.

What 1200 kit are you putting in yours, I will have a 1200 motor, including heads, throttle body, pushrods, cams etc, etc going cheap (well cheapish) to fund the 88 kit. Basically apart from the cases and gears the whole lot is being changed. If you're interested pm me and will send you my phone number. As you are only down the road no freight charges, so a cheap way to go. But will be a couple of months for me to find the dollars for the 88.

    Cheers,

Awesome mate, appreciate the further detail.

I've put a deposit down on a Frasers 'torque it up' kit - I saw you mention that you'd have the 1200 stuff good to go soon, but I had a limited window of opportunity and got a real good deal out of Frasers.

    Cheers mate,

Hope you enjoy it. What sort of dollars are you talking, need to get an idea of what I should ask for my motor that' fair?

If anyone else is thinking of upgrading their 88s as I said above "I will have a 1200 motor, including heads, throttle body, pushrods, cams etc, etc going cheap (well cheapish) to fund the 88 kit. Basically apart from the cases and gears the whole lot is being changed. If you're interested pm me and will send you my phone number. The motor's sweet but, I'm over 60 and may be dead tomorrow so, what the fuck, spend the kids inheritance on toys and an 88 inch kit seems like a pretty good way to start spending it!

    Cheers,

    Howard

I'm currently running a xr1200 front caliper on my 883 with 1250 upgrade and I love it.

Although I am about to fit a 21" spoked wheel from a 72 and I'm thinking it won't fit now, dose anyone know if the brake will fit that wheel?

    Thanks.
