Hi all, I recently got hit on my 2009 fat boy by a car, lucky all ok, but it looks like the barrels will be replaced on my engine under insurance due to the cooling fins damaged, my question is what can I take my 96 engine out too with out doing a head change 103?  or 107? It was also suggested now is a good time to do a cam upgrade? I'm after some advice And ideas

Good Morning, at the moment the engine is stock std, I like torque but not into high speed, just general riding with some touring

I'd pay the extra on top of what the insurance company will cover and get a kit like this. May as well while it's going to be stripped down that far anyways.

Sorry this is actually the older kit that requires cases to me machined. Find the newer SE 110 kit that doesn't require the case boring to be done. That would be the easiest.

Agree you need a budget on how much you're prepared to spend on top of the insurance payout. Little use in going to a bigger bore or higher comp without changing cams. Then need to consider what else you need to do with a cam change. Then tuning costs, an exhaust/muffler and air cleaner upgrade if you haven't already done so. Some simple upgrade ideas have a lot of extra costs that you don't always consider initially unless you've been through this exercise before.

Ok so far I have v&h big curve pipes, high flow air cleaner a vision ecu upgrade, the bikes been tuned and just with these things done puts out 92hp, insurance will cover 2 bores, piston rings and labour to repair, I really don't know what my budget is as I'm not sure what's best done while the engine is apart, happy to spend money but not really keen to go over 2k on top of insurance cost. I'm thinking cams and bigger sleeves and Pistons for now but will that be enough, I would like to go out 110 but is that too extreme? That's where I'm at with it so still looking for advice

Yeah I own a Vision tuner, I guess I need to see the insurance quote and then go from there .... Thanks for the advice so far

Another similar and good option is the s&s 107 cylinder and piston kit which has been tried and tested for quite a while now. The domed cp pistons set compression to almost 10.5:1 which is a perfect match to the s&s 585 ezy start cams which don't require compression releases and will make for easy starting. Depending on cam choice you're probably gonna need adjustable push-ups no matter what and most shops will suggest changing lifters too.
