I have a good set of gloves, but prefer not to wear them.
I want 'close contact' with the bars; I want that 'EXACT FEELING' of control.
I know I am forsaking an element of protection in the event of a spill ... but, the intimate tactile experience of hand to grip, is more comfortable/ important, for me.
Am also guesssing, that another downside to my preference for zero gloves, is that I'm forced to deal with sweaty palms ??
( I spose a good set of leather gloves eliminates the sweat issue ? )
..
A good pair of fingerless gloves (Harley have a huge range) in summer are the ants pants.
I ride without gloves and now suffer the side effects.......multiple skin cancers on the back of my paws!
Since I work with my hands I wear gloves every time I ride even if I am only wearing nothing else but a pair of speedo's.
Fuck! if I were a gigolo I guess I would wear a kevlar cock sock, but I aint and I don't.
Who gives a shit what you wear....do what you want to do ...be what you want to be....YEAH!
C'mon Speedy, protect those digits man! If you damage them how are you going to write all the questions on the forum or operate that shit stirring stick? With your nose? Having had a couple 'good' offs in my time, I always wear gloves and I'm bloody grateful I do. Thicker winter ones annoy me though. But what's this control business that you think your potentially missing by wearing gloves? Perhaps it would be worth putting down the gardening gloves and go try some primo leather ones. I'd argue you have more control wearing quality gloves -- if Valentino piloting a MotoGP weapon has all the control he needs to earn his pay check wearing gloves, I'm sure you can find it too. But hey, it's all up to you.
Speedy, you're right that your fingers/palms exposé more nerve endings to the grips and controls, and the tactile feel of no gloves is greater than the tactile feel of gloves. But only under certain conditions is all that extra feeling actually an advantage. For instance, the colder it gets, the more riding gloveless results in less tactile feel. Why? Because different nerve fibers in the body carry different kinds of signal. Extremities exposed to cold result in the fibers responsible for both cold and pain signals 'firing', thus increasing pain and decreasing agility. Then there is vibration. Vibration and fatigue are obviously positively correlated: more vibrations, the quicker fatigue sets in, as well all experience on long rides or rides where we change gear and brake alot. What do layers of leather or other glove material do? Cut down on vibrations. Maybe not much sometimes, but on rides likely to induce fatigue, maybe enough to preserve that extra millisecond or more of better reaction? Probably.
Point is, ride how you like, of course. I certainly enjoy no gloves on short, hot rides. But on longer hot rides, I wear my summer leather gloves. Keeps the sun and bugs at bay, etc. Colder weather, give me gloves. The key is to wear them in. They soften up, facilitating better grip. We all know these details. I am just adding that the actual advantages of going gloveless, for things like tactile feel and grip, are actually limited to shorter and warmer rides. Outside of those conditions, you're more likely to quickly be sacrificing pain, fatigue and grip protections associated with gloves.
haha, it's impossible for me to get a boot up to a mirror now too.
