been changing oil filters of various types and positions for 40 or so years on a daily/weekly basis. most of the time, if the filter sits verticaly i prime them.but when i dont it doesnt make any noticable difference.if the oiling sytem is up to sratch it will come up to pressure in a very short time.if the filter is horizontal or vertical but up side down the oil will run out before the seal is contacted,so theres not much point in priming them. hope this helps cheers

In the big picture, priming or not priming (if the oil system is performing as it should), I dont believe would be detrimental to engine wear .. I suppose it comes down to , what your Grand daddy told you... Now, if the engine had been drained of oil and sitting for a long period, priming the oil filter, (and other pre starting oil circulating procedures),, would be advisable ... That being said, I prime the oil filter on the Harley. If you fill it up with oil and let it soak in, (put the bike on the jiffy stand so its leaning the right way), it does'nt make a mess. And the main reason is, my Grand daddy told me to ...

I always prime. What does it take and extra 10 seconds? Why wouldn't you?

I ALWAYS fill the filter at least half way....you would be bloody surprised at how much oil the filter actually absorbs.

At the very least by priming it your minimizing any oil starvation issues when starting the engine for the first time.
