Hi all  have an old early 70s shovel   stripped flh , after mkt cases , later mod gearbox  ,so very hard to determine exact age of this ride its  bitsa shitza shovel  . Anyway all good goes hard  and is pretty reliable except for this dam voltage regulator. As of about 3years ago i have started going through  regulators  and batterys like nothing . first one failed  boiled the battery  ,fixed that replaced with a acel and a super start battery ,all good for  about  6 to eight months  then battery started to go flat gradually over a week or so .After checking ,load testing  battery  all ok then checking charging system all ok charging at about  14 + volts , checking all wiring  under seat  and everywhere else no faults found  as far as i can see  . Finally comes down to the voltage reg again and i have now determined that the reg is leaking power to earth via the body of reg . Heres how i made this determination correct or not i am unsure . First i disconected the     - neg  battery cable and put a test light between the  - pole of the battery and earth  and the test light lights up . then when i unmount the reg from the frame the light goes out . this is the same with the reg; disconected  and connected to the stator ... .   so far i am on my 3 reg in as many years these last 2 regs have been japanese solid state ones .  This bike is also running a electronic ignition , and i am not sure of the stator amp output , weather any of this has any bearing on my problem  not sure . Anyway this is getting beyond a joke and frustrating the hell out of me  any help or imput would help me greatly and get this old girl back on the road again and learn me something extra . all good cheers n beers styxnshovel

First do a intro in the intro section before the forum police get you lol the reg needs to be earth of the frame to work properly,
Seeing your going through regs and battery's that leaves one thing your stator may have issues that wear I would be looking
