Head gaskets

As a first time HD owner, I'm still learning my way around a few things, but after owning Jap and Euro bikes I find my superglide so easy to work on. I've removed the exhaust to replace the baffles, why remove the exhaust, you ask, because some tool, who didn't know how to use an Allen key, liked to make round inserts, necessitating the use of an angle grinder, anyway , my question is this, when I removed the exhaust, the gaskets were in really good shape, in the opinion of forum members, can I reuse them or do I replace them, thanks for any advice, Mike

Thanks mate, I meant the exhaust flange gasket, the gasket looked in top shape but being new to HD I just wanted to make sure

Replace the gaskets , even though it looks ok, what happens is when you do the progressive tightening sequence it quite probably will pull into the head slightly different to the original seating , they are really only good for compressing once , i hate doing jobs twice!
    Cheers.

wise decision. The Man that told you to replace them knows his stuff, and most people on this forum would agree

Evening all, put the exhaust back on today, new gaskets, did everything by the shop manual, interesting to see how thin the old gaskets were when I removed them, I'm no expert but I wouldn't reuse them, anyway, put new baffles in, and went for a ride, little bit quieter now, nice to go for a putt up the range, funny thing, new to Harley, told all my life what a crap bike they are, bloody b/s, haven't enjoyed riding so much, by the way thanks one and all for your thoughts, advice etc, Mike

+1 there.... Buy a 10 pack on eBay as they are one item that gets used a fair bit (well I do as I mess about with my pipes all the time)
