I'm in the boat of "to each their own" in terms of riding gear. I can understand the OP's comments if they work in CFS/health care/emergency and deal with this a lot - but at the same time, disagree with the "required by law" statement.
On a typical ride, i'll wear the kevlar jeans, leather jacket, full faced helmet for both safety and comfort- but every now and then i'll head out in a T and open face (to the wise cracks on here, still wearing jeans/boots)- and I'll say that there's no better feeling. It cannot be put down in words and I won't bother trying as it just won't do it justice (image below sums it up best i think). The riders who do it/have done it, know what I'm talking about. The riders who don't - you'll just need to try it to understand.
(pretty sure) no one rides bikes because it is safe.
Ride safe, ride smart and don't let go of the apes on the highway in a headwind.

Wrong .....
I was giving support to someone obviously willing to put his / her neck on the chopping block.
Or, to be more precise .....
Willing to 'take on the pack'.
