Hi guys, it's been a while since I've shared my adventures on here but thought it was time to share an update on the refresh I've been doing over the last 12 months or so. Essentially I wanted a bit more clearance, better brakes and a bit more go. It's been a drawn out process, but I'm nearly done now; just cosmetic touches left to finish off.

Step one was a set of Ricor shocks on the rear. I had been running the piggyback 1200S showa shocks, but they were starting to be a bit tired. I'd bought them 3rd hand in 2009 with I don't know how many kms on them, so I got some good service from them.

Next step was the forks and brakes. I wanted some more travel so changed out my Nightster forks for Roadster forks. After pricing up some options I went the route of fresh new forks over a rebuild to replace the damper tube, as I would have wanted to have re-powder coat the old forks too.

Also wanted to add dual Brembos, so in the process changed out my spokes for cast wheels and added dual stainless brake lines and a Vrod master cylinder.

Bleeding brakes isn't my favourite job, but not too much mess.

Next phase was a few more ponies. Started out by changing out my short shots for a D&D Bobcat.

Then some Hammer Impact 560 cams

Final step was a 90" kit from Hammer Performance. That might need another a separate post...

I didn't want to send my own heads or throttle body overseas, so that led me down a path of the following combination:

    • 90" cast iron cylinders
    • 30 Degree reverse dome pistons
    • Used 883 heads Sledge ported
    • Used OEM throttle body ported
    • 560 Cams (already installed)
    • 7mm Striker valve spring kit
    • Sledge Hammer .065 Pushrods
    • Crush Airhammer air cleaner
    • Energy One clutch kit
    • Powervision Tuner (already installed)

    Parts arrived just before Xmas

Cases were bored by Kingaoy Motorcycles

    Then sent for powder coating

Then reassembled (entire assembly by Kingaroy Motorcycles)

And finally sent for Dyno tuning at Procycle Dyno

    End Result

And now I patiently wait the transporter to truck her home to me :)

Thanks guys! Yes, very happy with the numbers. Wrapped with the shape of the curve, pulling hard all the way through my riding range.
Would have loved to have taken a couple of days to ride her home from Brissy, but alas, just wasn't going to happen this time. But I'll be back on two wheels soon.

And yes Walka, still have her, still love riding her smiley

Absolutely gorgeous! Have been tossing up a Hammer 88 inch or trading for the new Lowrider S. How much did it cost you for the 90? Last time I talked to Aaron seemed about 10k after freight, case boring, head work etc. But I need more oomph for lots more two up riding and although I love my Nightster at the moment it looks cheaper trading for the new Lowrider S, going the stealers tomorrow, having put a 90 in what do you reckon?

Hi Howard, honestly, and I can't quite believe I'm going to commit this to print, but if doing lots of two up riding, I'd probably go for the Lowrider. Purely and simply so that your pillion has more space and comfort. Sporties are nicely intimate two-up, which is fine for fun round town or short jaunts during the cooler months, but if you are going any distance though, a bit more seat room and distance to pillion pegs is nice for the passenger.
The 90" kit and parts listed above cost me US$3200 in parts and shipping. I already had the tuner and cams, which I guess would round you up to $4000 in parts. I was also fortunate I converted a wad of money to US dollars on a travel card back at parity before our dollar went into free fall.
Cost of boring and install is going to vary pretty significantly between shops. I got excellent value for money at Kingaroy Motorcycles. But I've been told anything between $2500 and $5000+ for installs by others. I know a couple of guys who've done disassembly and reassembly themselves and only paid a few hundred for the case bore. I wasn't quite ready to trust my wrenching skills that much, and life through me a curve ball in the midst of this build, so that "cemented the deal" and I had all the engine work done by the shop I trusted.

Yep. It's a shop where you trust hands with years of experience for precision, rather than a computer.

Thanks for the advice, know what you mean about not wanting to put it to print! Love the sporty but as I said want more oomph and a comfy perch for Lynn, after nine years on the back of a Z1000 with zilch rear seat she reckons the Nightster is the most uncomfortable thing she's been on. Didn't get to the dealers today as daughter, son-in-law and grandson decided to visit so will go on Tuesday. Don't you love the Bobcat, look great, sound awesome, if I get the Low rider S will definitely put one on once they become available.

Again many thanks for the advice and again beautiful build. Enjoy!

Nice work 123hp is pretty good , lets us know how the rear shocks work out as I'm in the market for new shocks as my rear shocks don't really work properly.

Thanks again for the advice Trace, kept looking at her again today, she was bought as a keeper and fuck it she is. Done similar (but different apart from the bobcat) brake, fork, shock and exhaust upgrades as you. Will buy a two up seat (any ideas out there C&C look interesting) and save for for an engine upgrade.

92Fatboy put Gazzi remote reservoirs on mine, built here in Oz for your weight, pillion, bike etc, faster you go better they work, at $850 a bargain I reckon.

    Thanks all.
lets us know how the rear shocks work out as I'm in the market for new shocks as my rear shocks don't really work properly.

The shocks got 2300 miles of workout on a sporty I was riding in the US before I brought them home with me. Several highway sectons, but most of the miles were in the mountains of West Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee including the Tail of the Dragon, Cherohala, and the Blueridge Parkway.
I love the shocks, though I was on the cusp of two spring weightings and went the lighter rated spring with a Sport tune on a 13" body. When I'm loaded for touring I wish I'd gone to the next rated spring, though having said that the extra preload gives me a more secure toehold for parking when loaded, so it's worked out well. I haven't gotten in a lot of riding here, but they've been fine on the straight, pot-holed and patched pieces of highway around Townsville too.

As I said earlier Trace she looks absolutely great. So after re-looking at your dyno read out, and being told by my grandson "no Pa that's (the Low Rider) not as nice as OUR bike" I cannot trade her, so will be saving for engine upgrade and of course a seat for "she-who-must-be-obeyed", probably a C&C or Corbin (Walka are you still offering a 10% discount for forum members?).  Couple of questions:

Any particular reason for going with the cast 90 inch kit rather than the alloy 88.

How you finding the twin disc set-up, put a XLCR caliper on mine plus EBC full floater and braided line and it's a great improvement but with the extra oomph do you feel twin discs are worth it/needed?
