Hi all,
First post here, glad to be a part of this community. This is my second bike (first HD) and I am loving it, but I have (caused) a problem.
Without getting into the details, I had to lay my beauty down coming out of my driveway to avoid getting crushed by some jackass going WAY too fast. Everything seemed okay, bent the shift lever a bit, so I took off and shifted through a few gears. At the first stop sign, I tried to get it back down to 1, but it refused to shift. Managed to make it home, but she refuses to change gears. Clutch seems to be unaffected, as the lever does its job engaging and disengaging. Have done some reading and chatting and think it might be the shifter pawl, but cannot claim confidence.
So basically, I am just hoping to get some advice before I jump into home maintenance. I am comfotable with tools and getting dirty, but will not pretend like im a mechanical guru (mostly just simple maintenance and tinkering with my VWs). I understand a good place to start will be to take off the primary cover and have a peak, but I don't have the tools to get the clutch off, so, at the moment, I am limited to just what I can reach without the cover on. Is there anything in particular I should look for that might be a quick fix? Does it sound like the clutch will definitely have to be pulled? Is there anyone in Brisbane willing to help a new owner for beers and sausages.
Thanks in advance folks.
Cheers,
Mike

Disconnect the bar that connects the shift pedal to the shifter spline. Once the pedal is disconnected see if you can change gears by flicking the lever that's attached to the shifter spline. If as you say the pedal or pedal assembley got bent in the accident it may be the thing that's stopping you shifting gears. If you cannot shift gears once the pedal is disconnected then it's most likely a bent shifter spline. In that case you'll have to remove the primary to diagnose it further. If it's only a bent pedal you can fix that without taking the primary off.
Thanks, will give this a shot
update, one thing i noticed was that the lower spring-loaded "clip" (see stock picture below) on the shifter pawl was what was resisting the movement and seemed out of place. so I rotated it back around to where I thought it belonged (to match picture below), and I am now able to shift between what I imagine is 4th and 5th (down once), but it locks up if I try to go any lower.
is it possible that it "thinks" it is second gear (which is honestly probably the highest gear I would have intended to shift to given the distance i traveled), so it will only go down one gear? (NOPE, see next post)
