Quick connect fuel leak.

Just put on my new handlebars on my Streetbob, got the throttle setup properly (this took some doing) and I was about to put on the seat and make vroom vroom noises when I remembered motorcycles need fuel.  So I hooked on the quick connect line to the tank (happiness meter drops at this point) and petrol starts pissing out. I quickly disconnect and reconnect, still pissing out.  So my first thought is the male part of the quick connect needs an o ring; it looks like it should have one.  Check my manual, not mentioned.  Did a quick google search and seems the male part doesn't have one.

The problem it suggests, is probably (99% chance) the lower o ring in the female part of the connector?  And apparently Harley doesn't sell them?  I know my luck with this shit; I'll run around the local stores and they'll all scracth their balls and tell me to try the Harley dealer.

Anyone got advice?  I'm sick of having a tiny thing fuck me over for weeks trying to get a fix.

Fucking sweet Ando... We have a John Deere parts distributor nearby, so fingers crossed. If not, I'll take the details around the local stores and try again.
I'm now wondering how I get it out...bent paperclip maybe?

I don't get why it messed up. All this time it's fine and suddenly it breaks first time I unclip it? How do I trust crap like that? I'm starting to think motorcycles are dangerous...

I used the same o ring as on all the oil drain plugs. You must lube the fitting before reconnecting or you will chop out the oring.
Been there, done that ha ha.

buy your self a pick set, kinchrome has them, one of them will hook it out no worries

Light smear of any grease should be alright, I have some silicon grease I used.

Cheers, as long as "normal" grease will do I should be fine. I've seen what the wrong spray can do to rubber and plastic...

And the local JD distributor HAD MY O RING !!!!!! I'll fit it straight-ish after work and then...after a deep breath...fire the fucker up.

It's all petroleum, if you use an oil drain plug o ring  they are exposed to oil so a light smear of grease on a o ring in the fuel system should be no worries. But hey hats why I used silicon grease as I have that in my workshop too, generally use that on all rubber

Got everything back together, o ring out, new one in, stuck on the quick connect and no fuel pissing out, but then I notice this:

I wipe it off and within a few minutes or so it's back.  It's obviously fuel.  The o ring looks seated fine.  So am I truely jinxed?

So a friend suggested that maybe it's just the fuel that's coated the barrel as I've inserted the quick connect. When I wipe it allows a little more to creep down?

So I let it sit for a fair while gave it a good wipe with some paper towel and it seemed to go away. When I moved the bike I noticed it did it again, but I left it, wiped and it's gone again.

Just now I went out and rocked the bike back and forth over and over and nothing came out...

I guess I'll see what's what in the morning, then give it a good wash. After it dries I'll see if anything looks suss and if not, I'll go for a ride. Start, check, ride to end of drive, check, ride to end of block, check etc etc.

Thanks guys, for all your help.

I had the same issue with the fatty when I changed the bars too. Leaked like a bitch and couldn't stop it. I actually gave it a spray with some carb cleaner and put it back together. Still leaked so I cracked the shits and walked away. Went back the next day and bugger me it didn't leak. Hasn't leaked since ????

Cool, then there is hope. I just want to crank it up and ride. I found a ton of shortcuts other people (mechanics) have taken and fixed them along the way, so if I can get rolling again it'll all be worth it.

So fuckity fuck fuck fuck, it's a leak. Slow, but a leak.

Went to grab a new top o ring today and out of 6 auto type stores, not one place had one (not top nor bottom o ring). Even so, two places tried to sell one the wrong sized ones saying "they should be right."

Also, I was thinking, anyone know how hard it is to remove the quick-connect fitting? Does it just wind off the tank? Might be easier than taking the whole tank off...not that I can find the damn o ring to go in anyway.

    Problem fixed!

So for future problem hunters, a tiny piece of rubber (of the old o ring?) was in the groove where I couldn't see it. It must have been stopping the new o ring from seating correctly.
Took me ages to get it to come out, but finally got hold of it and all is well.

Even got in a ride this arvo.
    Thanks guys.

You can get small pots of silicon grease at pool suppiers. Probably Big W ect would have it as well if anyone needs it out of normal trading hours.

There was a typo regards one of the o-ring sizes earlier in this thread (in the thickness of the large o-ring.  I've highlighted it for reference, it was a simple number transposition).  Here's the sizes & AS568A (i.e. standard reference) part numbers so you can quote at your local bearing service/o-ring store:

Large - ID 0.414" Thickness 0.072" OD 0.558" fits 5/16” tube.  AS568A Dash Number 905.  This is known as an O-Ring for Straight Thread Tube Fittings.

    Small - ID 0.299" Thickness 0.103” OD 0.505" AS568A Dash Number 109.

For information, the oil change orings some have used are:

ID 0.426" Thickness 0.070” OD 0.566" AS568A Dash Number 013.  They are close to the large o-ring size, but not perfect.
