Collar oil filter cooler

Was 34 here the other day and I could feel the old girl suffering, got me thinking about oil coolers and came across this oil filter cooler.

Seems like a clever idea because you can use it in summer and easily remove in winter but my question is: do they really work and how well?

Now it's been discussed before and pretty obvious that these would not be as good as a radiator style cooler, but in terms of an easily removable cooler are they any good?

WAS  WONDERING THE SAME THING KC EVEN IF THEY REDUCE TEMP A BIT THATS GOTA BE GOOD AND WHEN YOUR NOT USING IT ON THE BIKE WOULD MAKE A GOOD STUBBIE COOLER

    Andy,

My thoughts exactly, I rekon I might do a bit of research on these on some other sites. That's a good one, I never thought about the stubbie holder idea, it's just the right size too, ie 3".

SAW THOSE ON EBAY CUPLA WEEKS AGO AND THEN I ASKED THE SAME QUESTION ON ANOTHER OIL COOLER SECTION ON THE FORUM BUT GOT NO REPLY NOT THAT DEAR I RECKON I MIGHT JUST GET ONE AND DO MY OWN RESEARCH

Here's a pic of one fitted.  I came acoss these while searching for a dip stick temp gauge, I rekon I'll chuck one in with my temp gauge order.

    Update:

Got both the temperature gauge dip-stick and the cool collar on the bike now. I rode the bike with just the temp gauge for a couple of days and the temp hit around 175F to 180F, with the cool collar installed the temp dropped to around 160F. I'm not totally convinced yet so I will do some more tests but on the face of things they seem to work as described, ie cut the temp around 25F.

Hey KC, cheers for updating on how the cooler is going, I'm pretty interested in how it pans out over your "test period".

    KC,

I am really interested in this cooler too. Interesting to see the temp difference (on and off) under the same riding conditions. Please keep us posted.

Where did you get it and how much are they?

Recon I am up for one.

    Cheers

Dazza, I thought the softies ran cooler bacuase of the external oil tank. Dyna's just look cooler, and go harder :)

Seriously though, I can't see these filter covers making a difference. If any additional heat heat is dissapated into the airflow it is blown back onto the cylinder coling fins anyway. I could well be wrong (I often am) but it just seems like a gimmick to me.

    Boof,

In the initial tests that I've done with mine they do seem to work, I recently went on a 1 hour ride on a 29 degree day and it still made around 10F difference. If you think about it your entire engine oil passes through your oil filter probably ever minute when the bike is in motion.

Well fair enough then. I might have to get one then.

The cooler works by disipating heat from within ... from the oil as it passes through the filter. It's a heat sink if you will. So the important factor is a good heat contucting connection between the cooler and the filter. Painting the filer black would do nothing to help disipate heat from within the filter. In fact, it could raise the external surface temp of the fins (via sun or radiant engine engine heat) which would reduce the efficiency by reducing the internal/external temperature difference.

    Chrome is good.

    Pizzlin,

Understand what you are saying, you are 100% right about the Zener diodes. Most electronic heat sinks are black. The physics of heat and colors goes beyond my full understanding. I do know that black actually attracts and disipates heat faster than any other color. What that means for an oil filter's cooling ability exposed to radiant engine heat and sun, both moving and stationary,  is anyones guess ... to many variables for me!  If there are any physics professors out there, feel free to enlighten us.

So , back to our original programme .... do we have any end results from measurements ?

    Cheers, Mungrel

On the day of our Victor ride I clocked the maximum temp of my bike at 190F right after ride into Victor with the collar on, and it was reasonably hot that day around 31C. On my next ride I'll remove the collar on a day where the temp is in the low 30's and gun the bike to see what difference it makes.

good work kc ,even if the diff is minimal they are,nt very exspensive and they  give a  normally  plain  looking oil  filter  a       good  look  ,it will be interesting to see what the outcome is

had one on my train , made 5deg diff @ 110 , mine was a slipon with a grub screw holding it on there, it was from ebay usa and had 10mm high groves/fines
