Hi all, I am about to buy an FXR so that my wife an i can ride from Qld to Vic to see the kids. I am looking for advice on models, which are good and which are not so. My only requirements are that it be chain final drive, and no EFI. So from what i can see the 1986 was the last of the chain drive? And i see that on some models there is a thicker head gasket, which lowered the comp. ratio. Can anyone tell me why this was needed. Anyway i have been riding for thirty years [jap] and do most of my own work. Married with six kids. Which is why we both need to go for a nice long ride. Any tips or advice appreciated. Thanks

    Welcome to the forum

I know it is enjoyable to work on the bike sometimes, but I reckon riding is much more enjoyable.

Go Fuel injection and belts, carbies and chains are a pain in the arse.

    Just my .02 cents worth

Welcome to the nuthouse mate. I have been riding different model Harleys for 30 years, and would definatley go for a newer (EVO) model if you want reliability on the long haul. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks Dave, I am slowly coming around to the belt drive idea. I am a bit of an old school bloke, but i can see the benifits of the belt. As for year i am still uncertain, will make up mind depending on what is available and what i can stretch the budget too. Regardless of what year i will be running a mikuni, just don't like injection. I love the shovels, but what is the story behind the thicker head gasket? Was there ring blow past sending pressure to the wrong area's? I have nothing against the evo at all. My main requirement is that the bike be as reliable as possible. I have been thinking of may-be trying to get a rolling chassis and put a new s&s motor in. Just not to sure at the moment. Just looking and waiting for something to grab my attention.

    Funk.

    Hey Funk
Mate i have a shovel chain drive and love the thing but i bought it to wrench and play with as well as ride. If you want to turn the key and ride with reliability stick with the EVO / belt mate.
If the budget wont stretch and if it is for the missus as i think you mentioned then may be look for a nice little sporty with a few years on it?
Don't know mate but the older you get the less reliable......isn't that right old fellas???!!!

Hi Hutch, I am the pilot the wife is navagator.I am riding jap at the moment and do most of my own work so that side of things is fine. Just don't won't to find myself stranded half way with a huge bill to get underway again. Don't want a broken bike and wife nagging at me sort of thing. My second harley will be a sporty which i will turn into a Flattracker in the style of an XR 750, but that is a little bit further down the track [need to sell the FZR1000 and SR 500 to finance the project] Great time to buy at the moment, just can't sell. Anyway i am forced to be patient at the moment.
