Noise at constant revs

    G'day Riders,

Yesterday I test rode a 2013 XL1200C with SE heavy breather, fuel management module and V&H big radius 2 into 2 fitted. Loved the bike, my first ride of a Harley. I was shown a printout from a recent dyno tune and it seemed to perform well. I'm just about sold on it apart from one issue. When travelling at about 60 kph and in 3rd gear there is a noise coming from the engine or exhaust which is difficult to describe. It's like an intermittent blub, blub or like slamming the palm of your hand over the end of a pipe, sort of a bubbling sound. I couldn't hear or replicate the sound under any other conditions. Does anyone have an idea what this could be or if it reason for concern? I couldn't get the bike to produce any backfiring or decel popping so hopefully it's nothing major.

    Cheers,

    Tazz

Update: I've spoken to the mechanic that performed the dyno and he reckons it's probably the stage 3 kit that is producing the effect I'm hearing. He also guaranteed his work and offered to have a look at the bike for me after I buy it. Looking very much like I'll be a proud Harley owner by the end of today.

After riding the bike about for a couple of days I have noticed that my initial assessment of it isn't fully descriptive of the issue. The bike doesn't like holding constant revs in any gear or at any rpm. The blub noise can be audible on other occasions. It doesn't run smooth at constant revs at all, accelerates evenly and has heaps of torque but doesn't like to cruise at speed. Is this the nature of the beast or can my bike be tuned to run evenly at constant speed, that is the question.

Yes dyno chart shows max torque at 111.26 and max power at 84.52. I'll scan it later when I have access to a scanner and post it here.

My old eyes are struggling to see the chart but my guess is that she is running lean at constant throttle, this causes the surging you mentioned. What tuner came with the bike...

I was told the module is a Screaming Eagle. I have got a little orange box that came with the bike, the PO told me not to lose it because my bike can't be tuned without it. I'll check it out when I get home. What details would you like about it?

Take your bike and tuner module to Richardsons HD for a re tune .

Do yourself a favour and take it to titan bike and trike, they can pick up and deliver as well, they are a country mile ahead of the competion in re to Dyno work, good blokes and will get your bike running A1.

No worries, thanks for the advice, I am going to be one happy biker when she's running smooth.

A trip to Hobart to get it tuned at Titan B&T would be a nearly 400km trip. Will it hurt the bike to ride it as it is?

Hi Tazz, get on the blower and give Shaun a ring at titan, he may actually be up your end of the island picking up bikes or doing recovery work on broken down bikes and may be able to fit yours in, you never know.

You can just have a yap with him about your bike and its issues and he will  help out, just ask at the start of the conversation if its a good time and it will be sweet. He tuned my 2012 Deluxe like a dream, runs hard as from idle to peak, had some issues with tuners in Melbourne and thats being polite so off it went to Shaun, best move i made.

He has some animal bikes that the team has built and he is up front in re to options and prices, he's currently building my shovel for me and has worked on numerous mates bikes with nil issues, i don't work there lol but after owning harleys since i was 17 and am now 50, i have seen my fair share of bullshit at harley repair shops and stealerships, refereshing to have one that maintains my stanards of workmanship, tell him shovel John from Melbourne recommedned that you give him a call and have a conversation and taqke it from there.
